The similarities between humans and pigs

‘You’re a pig!’ It might be a common insult but, interestingly, there are a number of similarities between humans and pigs. These include various anatomic and physiologic traits, such as organ placement (and often size and function), skin similarities and some disease progression.

A pig weighing around 60 kilograms will, for example, resemble a human body in many ways, including fat distribution, cover of hair and ability to attract insects. For this reason, pigs have been used in medical research for over 30 years, and are what’s known as a translational research model. This means that if something works in a pig, it has a higher possibility of working in a human.

So do these similarities mean that humans are closely related to pigs? Not necessarily. Many of these shared physical traits are not the result of a close ancestry, but rather of convergent evolution—that is, selection of the same characteristics by a common environment. Phew, you might say—your bedroom might resemble a pigsty but at least you’re not related.

A pig weighing around 60 kilograms will ... resemble a human body in many ways, including fat distribution, cover of hair and ability to attract insects.

But what about on the genetic level? Well, that might be a different story. Comparison of the full DNA sequences of different mammals shows that we are more closely related to mice than we are to pigs. We last shared a common ancestor with pigs about 80 million years ago, compared to about 70 million years ago when we diverged from rodents.

A new study has revealed a potential hidden evolutionary link between pigs and primates. Genetic elements called SINES (short interspersed elements) are usually considered to be ‘junk DNA’, left behind by marauding viruses. However, these elements may hold additional clues about our mammalian evolutionary history.

In humans, the most common SINE is the Alu transposable element, which is derived from the small cytoplasmic 7SL RNA. The latest research has revealed that 7SL RNA is also the original source for a common swine SINE. Just a fluke? Unlikely, according to researchers, who think that this SINE must have had a common origin. This suggests that there are close parallels between the evolution of this element in pig and primate lines, whereas it died out in the rodents.

Some scientists believe that the results are ‘convincing enough to classify the suidae (swine) into a family mainly inhabited by primates’, though the evidence from the entire genome disputes this. The genome is a complex puzzle. Bits of it came from different sources and evolved at different rates. While some pieces may match, you need to look at the entire genome to really understand the full picture. Geneticists are busy analysing all aspects of the human genome, including its previously overlooked SINES.

So, if you snort when you laugh or pig out at dinner, don’t fret—you’re still human.

Question for mullah minded people, is it ok to transplant pig organ in humans?
Not only Mullah minded people, but This also raises questions for every Muslim, because Heart is mentioned 132 times in Quran.

Of these Qur'anic statements, some describe HEART as having the capacity of being a center of reasoning, intentions and decision – making.

Consequently, human hearts can either be healthy or diseased. Healthy (or soft hearts) can have their humane attitude and balanced rational, while diseased (or hard, stony) hearts can loose both their humane touch and their capacity to see and understand.

Such Qur'anic emphasis on the role of the human hearts in the mental, emotional and spiritual decisions of man came down more than 14 centuries ago, while physicians have –for centuries – been restricting the function of the human heart to the mere process of pumping the blood throughout the human body.

I know what the heart means in the Quran. Question is, if the pig heart could save a life is it ok to transplant it?

My answer, yes, it is.

You wrote "I know what the heart means in the Quran. "

Please enlighten us with your explanation of the Heart in the Quran.

Explain this

it is the centre of all your feelings, emotions, motives, drives, aspirations, remembrance and attention. It is the heart which softens Quran 39:23, or hardens. Quran 2:74

It is the heart that goes blind and refuses to recognize the truth Quran 22:46 and it is the heart that inspires the function to reason and understand. Quran 7:179; 22:46; 50:37

In the heart, lies the root of all outward diseases Quran 5:52; it is the seat of all inner ills Quran 2:10.

The heart is the abode of faith Quran 5:41 and hypocrisy.

Quran 9:77 It is the heart, which is the centre of all that is good and bad, whether it be contentment and peace Quran 13:28,

the strength to face afflictions Quran 64:11, mercy Quran 57:27, brotherly love Quran 8:63, God-Consciousness Quran 49:3; 22:32; or, doubt and hesitation Quran 9:45, regrets Quran 3:156, and anger Quran 9:15.

Finally it is, in reality, the way of the heart for which we shall be accountable, and only the one who brings before his God a sound and sincere heart will deserve to be saved.

God will not take you to task for a slip, but He will take you to task for what your hearts have earned. Quran 2:225

The Day when neither wealth nor children shall profit, [and when] only he [will be saved] who comes before God with a sound heart [free of evil]. Quran 26:88-89

You must therefore ensure that so long as you are with the Quran, your heart remains with you. The heart not being that piece of flesh but what the Quran calls qalb.

God has sent down the best discourse as a Book, fully consistent within itself, oft-repeated, whereat shiver the skins of those who fear their Lord; then their skins and hearts soften to the remembrance of God. Quran 39:23

Quran chapter 2, verse 173:
"173. He hath only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that on which any other name hath been invoked besides that of Allah. But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits,- then is he guiltless. For Allah is Oft-forgiving Most Merciful."

The key seems to be "if forced by necessity" and a heart operation (literally a matter of life and death) would seem to fall in this category. Allah knows best.

That ayat is specifically about Halal "eating" guidelines.

Allah only forbids eating pork. It is we who have created this whole thing around the pig as being some kind of untouchable achoot janwar. Even mentioning the name of Khanzeer some people go into a tailspin.

I already know about this. A very very long time ago when I started my first undergraduate degree from Sydney uni, my Jewish lecturer had told me that it is also forbidden in his religion to eat pork, but according to medical science pork is a lot healthier than red meat. Red meat gives colon cancer. I didn't start eating pork after that but I did my own research and I found out he was absolutely right.

If that patient is you, your mother/father/daughter, you can let them die with dignity.
At that time he will say khanzeer kya dil ka agar haathi ki soond bi apni L ki jaka transplant kerni parde to ker dena.
Yeh log nirri baatian ker sakthe hain.
