Perhaps this is the background of Trump's action - Trump had promised that he'll help the protest movement. However this attack will rather strengthen the regime and its control over people.

In the broader context, the prime issue of ME is virtual occupation of Iraq through proxy rule and control of political parties/bureaucracy. That was the net outcome of US-Iraq war.
This situation is not sustainable, neither historically nor practically. No peace can be achieved in the region until Iran ends its hegemonic ambitions in the region.
