Disagree, these were the same moulvis ( Although Hamza Yusuf is a very decent Maliki scholar, but has spent too much time in wahabi lands ) that first declared radios haram, then TV haram, then computers haram, then internet haram etc etc. Stop trying to blame others and external factors for your own weaknesses.

The point he raised is valid though. For example, Ramadan is a month where TV channels make most of the money so they have to put the best of their programs. How come the holiest month of Muslims is also the month where most of the TV is watched? Who taught our children to get addicted to junk food? Online addiction will affect the whole society not the Muslims only. People are spending most of their time watching useless videos or useless chat on the net. I was reading the FLOW book by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. He has written that the French use to search for lice in their friends' hair to pass time in the thirteenth century, and we have television and mobile now.

The world is not moving forward because the current generation is wasting too much time. I give you an example. My grandfather was born in 1900. He passed away in 1991.

During his life of 91 years, what did he experience? Let me give you some examples.

1) People used to travel on horse carts when he was young then he saw the invention of the car, then a plane in his life.
2) He saw the invention of the Black and White TV then colourTV.
3) Man landed on the moon in his lifetime.
4)Kidney transplant and dialysis became common.
5) Application of antibiotics became common.
6) Computers were invented.
7) Atom bomb was invented.
8) There used to be gas lights in the houses, electric lights became common.
9) Although the telephone was invented before his birth but became common in India in his lifetime

And what are the major inventions since my grandfather passed away in 1991, i.e 30 years

1) Internet
2) Mobile phones.

That's all?

My point is, something is wrong with the way we and the youngsters are spending most of their time. People using Whatsapp and Facebook to tell their mates how often they go to the bathroom and such discussion is taking most of the time. When they wake up they need to see their mobile phones.

Watch the above video and you will understand that most of the points Hamza Yusuf has made are quite valid for the current generation.

The reason we are in a crisis is that our Ulema are not standing up to the wrong policies of the Rulers. Ulema are the source of divisiveness among the Muslims because they can not unite among themselves.
We are not providing the right guidance to our young men especially. Women tend to do what men like because that is their way to being powerful and respectable. Give education to women and make them financially and socially powerful so they do not have to depend upon men for financial and social success, this will allow them to feel secure and thus raise good kids without having to compromise.
All these lectures are good but they are not the real answer.

SO if nothing worthwhile was invented in the last 30 years, then would you prefer living in the 90s or now.

You are still not getting my point. The whole world we live in, changed in the 20th century due to the advancement and there is hardly any advancement in the last three decades. Should we be concerned? This is my point? Albert Einstein had said that identifying the problem is more important than finding a solution. We don't even care if there is a problem. Why the advancement from the world has stopped or has slowed down so much?

No I am getting it very well

I just don't agree with with it at all.

Thats what you think. The problem is not with the world, the problem is with you, who stills compare yesterday with today. Todays day and age. Information is king and we have have developed leaps and bounds in that field and thats where the concentration of development will be.

All the while traditional development is also taking place, for example, we just flew an autonomous aircraft on another planet. We have live HD feed from another planet, we have photographed a black hole. Cars are 1000 times more safer than they were 30 years ago, we can clone living animals, grow human parts, print solid objects, we have more computing power in the palm of our hand than the entire space shuttle so on and so forth.

SO if you are going to be willfully blind, there is nothing I can do about it.

You are really knowledgeable to say that there has been no advancement in the last 20 years. Do you live under a rock. A whole new paradigm shift has happened in these 20 years. We have seen a basic move from specialist fields to a systems approach to solving problems. Automation has given way to AI and machine learning. Engineering has got inextricably linked to medicine and so many other areas. Infact it is the most exciting time to live in where the rate of change of research and innovation has exploded. This has been supported by the market demand. Hubble telescope had a cost of 4 billion while a GSM receiver which is a greater technological marvel is available to everyone and for free.

Rambler Wrote "You are really knowledgeable to say that there has been no advancement in the last 20 years. "

NO, I had written " And what are the major inventions in the last 30 years " I did not say there are no inventions. Check again what I wrote . .

And when you wrote you are very knowledgable, which was kind of a personal attack in a science discussion.

I think it is the wrong forum for such a discussion.
I absolutely wasted my time discussing this topic in this forum.

I spoke about this topic i.e. Advancement in technology in the current era at the Macquarie university Sydney few weeks ago.
This is a common topic of discussion if you have been reading any science magazines.

Here is one of the links in support of my argument. I will not take part in this discussion any more.

You just wasted a minute of my time reading an article by someone who provides consulting services on finance and marketing. My advice to you is to read and listen to the right people who are in the thick of things. Also people come to this world with a different set of skills. You should try to get skilled in a trade and not waste time on intellectual pursuits. Adios amigo!

Don't start something if you can't finish it, as for the article, I can find you a dozen that say the opposite.

And if there is any slow down it just boils down to finances, last century saw two world wars, a cold war and huge space race and a lot of major advancement can be linked to those events even something as mundane like velcro is a product of the space race, where govts had opened up their coffers and money flowed like there was no tomorrow. Things just needed to be done, regardless of cost.

Also most major needs of humans have been fulfilled, we can be in any part of the world in a matter of hours, roads, infrastructure, communication etc etc, now these are just being refined. Air travel can be made much faster and the tech already exits but its not economically feasible so its not, in fact we took two steps back, the Concorde was supersonic and crossed the atlantic in a matter of hours, now we are back to subsonic, why? Economics.

Now the only real challenge left is cheap energy, which I don't think the world will let happen, a lot has been invested in fossil fuel and is a multi trillion dollar industry and in the hands of the power, if cheap free energy comes into play, they lose all their power. So thats not happening anytime soon.

Gaddafi tried to get rid of the petrodollar see what happened to him, although he was bonkers and probably deserved what happened to him.

Thank you for your advice. By the way, you are very good at personal attacks.

I am currently a lecturer at one of the top universities in Australia. I teach IT-related subjects.

Oh I apologize. You are right then. If there are more of you masquerading as teachers in 'Top Universities', fate of technological progress is bound to be doomed.

I apologize sincerely but it is the way you built your argument on examples of inventions which seemed very prosaic e.g The electronics revolution came out of the invention of transistors and IC's - Moore's law is still valid even though nearing its collapse and quantum is on its way to replace it. Medical science is another field and so on. So in order to build a case you should have taken a field of knowledge (or broader area) and then built your arguments. I agree that the 20th century saw a drastic change however it was based on the scientific knowledge created in the previous centuries. It was because of the advanced in mechanics in the first half of the 20th century and electronics in the second half that catapulted the scientific discoveries to actual products. This century is seeing another revolution - a paradigm change as I mentioned which is the move towards dynamic self-regenerating and ultimately self-creating systems. A very important change in this regard is the influence of different fields of knowledge on each other. It started with the influence of other fields on the development of computing and then the reverse osmosis of computing concepts on other fields (just one major example). In terms of science the discoveries are bound to slow down with the low hanging fruit already picked. The forces of nature have been reduced to three now. Electrical and mechanical were most easiest to integrate. Adbus salam helped with the unification of weak and strong forces. Unifying gravity with others will be the hardest. Don't know if humans will ever unify all forces of nature and come up with the theory of everything. Seems like a far fetched goal but its still exciting moving towards it.
