Worldwide coronavirus infections have passed 30 million according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University. More than 940,000 people have died of COVID-19. These numbers announced as Israel heads back into a nationwide coronavirus lockdown later on Friday - it's the first country to shut down for a second time. Hundreds protested the return of the measures in Tel Aviv, saying another lockdown would cause more harm to the economy. Israeli authorites say the meassures are necessary after the infection rate soared back to become one of the highest in the world. Britain and France rolled out new coronavirus restrictions on Friday as cases in both countries continued to climb. In northeast England, about 2 million people, including those in the cities of Newcastle and Sunderland, will no longer be allowed to meet people outside of their homes, while bars will only be allowed to operate with table service and entertainment venues will close by 10pm. On Monday, nationwide restrictions limited socialising to groups of six or fewer. In France, where there are more 10,000 new cases each day, Lyon and Nice were bracing for further restrictions, following limits imposed this week in Bordeaux and Marseille. In Spain officials in the capital Madrid said one in five hospital beds are occupied by coronavirus patients and have called for "decisive" action from the central government. New restrictions and local lockdowns are expected to be announced today. The World Health Organization regional director for Europe Hans Kluge said a record surge in cases across the continent "should serve as a wake-up call."
