Cut off technology during meals: Nutritionist

Fruits, vegetables may lower bladder cancer risk

Researchers in the United States say their studies suggest that greater consumption of fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing invasive bladder cancer in women.

Researchers at the University of Hawaii described in the Journal of Nutrition that they analysed data collected from 185,885 older adults over a period of 12.5 years, Xinhua reported.
Overall, 152 women and 429 men were diagnosed with invasive bladder cancer.

After adjusting for variables related to cancer risk, such as age, the researchers found that women who consumed the most fruits and vegetables had the lowest bladder risk.


According to the researchers, women consuming the most yellow-orange vegetables were 52 percent less likely to have bladder cancer than women consuming the least yellow-orange vegetables.
The study also suggested that women with the highest intake of vitamins A, C and E had the lowest risk of bladder cancer.


There are, however, no associations between fruit and vegetable intake and invasive bladder cancer in men, the study found.


“Our study supports the fruit and vegetable recommendation for cancer prevention,” researcher Song-Yi Park at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center said in a statement.
“However, further investigation is needed to understand and explain why the reduced cancer risk with higher consumption of fruits and vegetables was confined to only women,” Park said.

There is no way blood pressure will be higher (unless its already) as you are not supposed to eat salt, rather eat the zardi part of egg only...you actually peel off the sufaidi which is in contact with salt...:-)

How it will fix the diabetes is an interesting question.

I wish I could say that the treatment described above is sure shot for getting rid of Diabetes.
There are so many diabetes treatment myths floating around on the internet.
If all these myths were real; people who are promoting these treatments would be millionaires.

The Fact that Diabetes is a disease that can be managed with treatment and diet but it can not be cured.

Red grapes, blueberries may enhance immune function

Two compounds found in red grapes and blueberries may help boost the human immune system, a study has found.Resveratrol in red grapes and pterostilbene from blueberries could work with vitamin D to raise the activity of a gene called human cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide, or CAMP gene, which is involved in immune function, Xinhua cited researchers from the Oregon State University as saying.

Out of a study of hundreds of compounds, just these two popped right out, said Adrian Gombart, an associate professor in the universitys college of science.
Their synergy with vitamin D to increase CAMP gene expression was significant and intriguing. Its a pretty interesting interaction, Gombart said.
Resveratrol has been the subject of dozens of studies for a range of possible benefits, from improving cardiovascular health to fighting cancer and reducing inflammation.
This research is the first to show a clear synergy with vitamin D that increased CAMP expression by several times, the researchers said.
The CAMP gene itself is also the subject of much study, as it has been shown to play a key role in the innate immune system, or the bodys first line of defence and ability to combat bacterial infection.

The innate immune response is especially important as many antibiotics increasingly lose their effectiveness.
A strong link has been established between adequate vitamin D levels and the function of the CAMP gene, but the new research suggests that certain other compounds may play a role as well, the researchers reported in the journal Molecular Nutrition and Food Research.
However, they cautioned that the findings were made in laboratory cell cultures and do not prove that similar results would occur as a result of dietary intake.

Exercise, diet habits improving among youth: study

Over the last decade, US kids and teenagers have started getting slightly more exercise and reduced their television watching, a new study suggests.
Using surveys conducted in middle and high schools, researchers also found increases in the number of days youth reported having breakfast each week and in how often they ate fruits and vegetables. Those trends have corresponded to a leveling off in obesity rates, but not a decline, the study showed.

“I would like to believe that all the public health efforts focusing on increasing physical activity and increasing fruit and vegetable consumption are having an effect, because that seems to be a pattern,” Ronald Iannotti, the lead author on the study from the University of Massachusetts Boston, said.

“The fact that (obesity) is leveling off, that’s a surprise and a major change from the steady increase that we’ve seen over time,” Iannotti, who worked on the study while at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in Bethesda, Maryland, said. “This is great news.”
He and co-author Jing Wang analyzed surveys given to a nationally-representative sample of students in sixth through tenth grades in 2001-2002, 2005-2006 and 2009-2010 as part of the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study. Each survey period included responses from between 9,000 and 15,000 adolescents.
The researchers found “encouraging” trends on measures of most diet and lifestyle habits.
For example, the number of days each week that kids reported being physically active for at least 60 minutes increased from 4.3 in 2001-2002 to 4.5 in 2009-2010, with similar trends among boys and girls. Likewise, youth reported eating breakfast on three school days each week on the first survey and 3.3 days on the last.
The average number of hours students spent watching TV each day fell from 3.1 to 2.4, with drops in both weekday and weekend viewing.
Frequency of fruit and vegetable consumption also rose slightly over time - although it remained at less than one daily serving of each, on average - and consumption of sweets and soft drinks fell.
However, the proportion of survey participants who were overweight or obese, based on their own height and weight reports, did not decrease, the researchers wrote on Monday in Pediatrics.
Rates of obesity - defined as body mass index, a measure of weight in relation to height, in the 95[SUP]th[/SUP] percentile or higher - rose from 10.3 percent in 2001-2002 to 12.7 perc ent in 2005-2006, then held steady through the final survey.
“This is encouraging, because at least it looks like things have kind of stabilised, and at least they’re not going in the wrong direction,” Marian Huhman, who studies health communication and health campaigns at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, said.
“Maybe it just takes a few years for the outcomes of obesity changes to follow from the behavioural changes,” she added.
Huhman, who wasn’t involved in the study, pointed to the “effort on many, many fronts” that may have led to the positive changes in physical activity, sedentary behavior and diet - such as walk-to-school programs and campaigns targeting food marketing.
However, adolescents “are still largely not meeting the recommendations for amount of screen time, amount of physical activity (and) amount of fruit and vegetable consumption,” she said.
Iannotti echoed that concern.
“Although they’re increasing, the recommendation is five servings of fruits and vegetables per day. And we’re looking at one or two,” he told Reuters Health.
“There’s still vast room for improvement.”

Green tea and papaya can prevent diabetes: Researchers

Green tea and fermented papaya are preventive means for diabetes, researchers at the Centre of Excellence for Biomedical and Biomaterials Research at the Mauritius University have concluded.
“The Mauritius green tea prevents an increase of sugar levels in blood while the fermented papaya helps positively reduce the level of the reactive protein C and the uric acid,” said Prof Theeshan Bahorun presenting the research findings on Wednesday, Xinhua reported.
Bahorun said the results are very significant because they show a reduction of risk factors for diabetes and cardiovascular diseases without medical intervention.

The researchers asked 77 participants, who had reached a pre-diabetic stage to drink three cups of green tea before meals for 14 weeks. Apart from this, 78 participants took three cups of hot water everyday for the same period, followed by a two-week weaning period.

Later, all the participants were tested for the bio-markers such as rate of glycemia and lipid, immune system, functioning of liver and kidneys, inflammation and ferrous toxicity.
“We discovered that green tea reinforced the anti-oxidant defences of those who had reached the pre-diabetic stage. And most importantly, the tea did not have any negative impact,” Bahorun said.
Another group of 127 people participated in the study on the impact of fermented papaya on diabetes.
Out of these, 50 consumed two packets of fermented papaya per day for a period of 14 weeks and 77 others took two glasses of hot water each day for the same period, followed by a two-week weaning period.
Then, they were tested for glycemia, cholesterol, urea, creatinine and uric acid.
“Those who consumed two packets of fermented papaya showed several positive changes vis-a-vis the diabetes risk factors,” the professor said.
The results further showed that when taken in small doses, the fermented papaya could help in the promotion of oral hygiene.

Juice fans trumpet ‘reboot’ detox

“It’s a wonderful way to get powerful nutrients in your body,” added Miller, whose house has been transformed into an ashram, a place of peace away from the bustle of Los Angeles, half an hour away.
Juice bars are everywhere in southern California, which has long embraced New Age culture. In upmarket areas like Santa Monica or Beverly Hills, they are on every street corner.
And it’s not uncommon to see Angelenos saunter down the street with a polystyrene cup full of vegetable juice, instead of coffee.
“It’s the new wine,” said Miller, serving up a greenish brew to two visiting journalists.
Veggie juices can contain anything from kale to ginger, mixed with beetroot, carrots, coconut milk or almonds. For fruit lovers there are dates, nuts, bananas and apples, while cucumber or celery produce lighter juices.
And while some limit themselves to occasional juice at a neighborhood bar, others have turned it into a lifestyle option, with “cleansing” or “juice detox” regimes lasting three, seven, or even 30 days.
Fans say such “cures” are a kind of spiritual experience. On a more practical level, others note that a five-day “cleansing,” consuming nothing but juices, can help one shed 10 kilos (22 pounds).
Heather, a 42-year-old physiotherapist, has just finished a 72-hour juice detox — and raves about the experience.
“It makes me feel so good it’s almost addictive. I feel closer to myself, I feel clear-headed, I feel more energized and my body gets the chance to reboot,” she told AFP.
Indian juice bar manager Baba Ji has opened two outlets in the last two years in the hipster areas of Silver Lake and Los Feliz, just east of Hollywood. “In the last few years juicing has exploded — everybody wants to open a juice bar. Everybody want to do a detox,” he said.
Depending on where you go, a three-day juice “cure” can cost between $120-250, he said. The price can go up to $400 for five days.
His customers say they are convinced it has changed their lives.
“I have been drinking green smoothies every day for the past two years and the result just has been phenomenal. Higher on energy, decrease need of sleep and I just feel healthy,” said yoga instructor Dharan Avtar, 40.
David Goodman, 37, an inventor and musician, added: “You feel more energy, you sleep better and sleep less. I felt younger when I was 30 than when I was 16 just because of all the juicing.
“I’ve done one for a month, but over the last seven years I did a lot. It’s great, it changes your life.”
In July, financial news weekly Barron’s estimated the value of America’s juice industry at $5 billion, with annual growth of 4-8 per cent. The country has some 6,200 juice bars, concentrated in Los Angeles and New York.
And in a sign that the trend is really taking root, a branch of the national Walgreens drug store chain in Hollywood has a juice bar. And cafe giant Starbucks opened its first juice bars this year in Seattle and San Francisco.
But nutritionists, while welcoming the growth of vegetable juices, warn against taking it too far with juice-only diets.
“It is kind of extreme, and for the general population it’s not necessary to exclude all food,” Julieanna Hever, a dietician specialised in plants, told AFP.
“Why not just eat a more balanced overall diet? Unfortunately people eat what they want to eat, and then they feel they have to detoxify from it ... we all would be better off if we ate healthily all the time.”
She added: “Our body is made to detoxify. It’s got kidneys and a liver and our skin.”
“Our organs are made to constantly detoxify. So if we stop putting in all the toxins we are going to get healthy anyway. We don’t need to go to a special juice cleanse to detoxify.”

Probiotics linked to lower risk of allergies for kids

Babies whose mothers take probiotics while pregnant and those who are given the so-called “good bacteria” supplements early in life may be at lower risk for allergies but not asthma than other kids, according to a new analysis of past studies.

Doctors don’t typically recommend for or against probiotics for pregnant women or young children, and it’s still too soon to make that leap, said senior author Dr. Erick Forno of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

“Based on our findings, probiotics have a protective effect against allergies, but we still have things to learn before we can give general advice to the public,” he told Reuters Health in an email.

Bacteria living in the gut and digestive tract have been linked to immune system health. So getting enough probiotics - microorganisms like those in yogurt and yeast that have a beneficial effect on the balance of gut microbes - might logically help support a healthy immune system as well, researchers said.

Since allergies and asthma both spring from hypersensitive immune responses, several trials have set out to assess the effect of probiotic supplements on those conditions.
Trials most often use probiotic supplements in pill form because dosing is easier to control, but there is no reason to believe dietary probiotics like those in yogurt wouldn’t also be effective, Forno said.
His team analyzed the results of 25 trials of supplements given during pregnancy or within the first year of a child’s life. All of the studies compared mothers and babies randomly assigned to take probiotics with those given placebo supplements.
Participants were given probiotic doses daily, and in some cases more than daily, for a few months to a year.
The trials tracked whether kids went on to test positive for common allergies - such as peanut or pollen allergies - and whether they wheezed or showed signs of asthma, based on a questionnaire given to parents.
Babies who were exposed to probiotics in the womb and received supplements after birth had a 12 percent lower risk of allergies in the following months and years than kids in the comparison groups. But allergy risk was not reduced when babies were started on probiotics after birth only.
Postnatal probiotics may not be necessary to see a beneficial effect, but further studies would be needed to clarify that point, according to Mimi Tang, director of the department of allergy and immunology at Royal Children’s Hospital in Parkville, Australia.
There did not seem to be a difference in asthma risk for kids who received probiotics, the researchers reported in Pediatrics.
“It must be noted though that only a few of the studies followed subjects beyond age five and diagnosis of asthma is not clear under this age, so most of the studies are really only reporting on wheezing episodes which may not necessarily be asthma,” Tang, who was not involved in the review, told Reuters Health.
Probiotics are generally regarded as safe and studies have not found serious side effects, but it’s still not clear which specific microbes are best and at what dosage, she said.
Forno said the new findings may help bolster the so-called hygiene hypothesis.
“As nations have become more industrialized and developed, they have also become cleaner, and therefore our exposure to microbes early in life has decreased, and this has decreased infections,” he said.
The hygiene hypothesis posits that the cleaner environment may have led to an increase in allergies and asthma.
“The theory is that such exposures in early life helped our immune system to learn how to ‘self regulate’ and recognize what to fight and what not to,” he said.
“Our hope is that with the results from our study, researchers will move on from trying to determine ‘if’ probiotics help prevent allergies, and into ‘how’ or what the best approach may be.”
