Pakistan’s supreme court has ordered the arrest of the prime minister on corruption charges.
Judges gave authorities 24 hours to arrest Raja Pervez Ashraf and 16 others in connection with an alleged scandal involving power plants while he served as water and power minister in 2010.
News of the warrant was ‘totally unexpected’ to Mr Ashraf, who has denied the charges, an official said.
It came as Islamic cleric Muhammed Tahirul Qadri staged a mass rally in Islamabad calling for president Asif Ali
Zardari’s government to resign.
Mr Qadri has ties to the army, which has raised fears the military is working with the judiciary to topple a civilian leader.
Speaking from behind a bullet-proof shield, the cleric said: ‘The government has wasted and brought a bad end to our armed forces, those armed forces who are highly sincere, highly competent and highly capable and highly professional.’
Mr Zadari is hoping to lead the country’s first full-term civilian government as he deals with a Taliban insurgency and growing sectarian tensions.
The arrest order came after chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry said elections should go ahead as scheduled.
