The blanket of the Five Pillars put them in a deeper slumber and stopped any possible movement towards Scientific research and modernization.

Man the landing video was nothing short of spectacular. We've all seen animations of how rovers land on the martian surface or at best fuzzy stills. But a full fledged HD video. My jaw literally dropped! It's hard to believe this is from another planet, but the only thing I can think of is how much it looks like earth!
