Najam Sethi: Pervaiz Musharrafs advice to treat MQM leniently rejected by the top army leadership, was told to stay away
LAHORE: Saulat Mirza, whose allegations in the latest video are not new, is requesting his colleagues not to support Altaf Hussain and become approvers because they have been used and disposed of like tissue paper, said Najam Sethi in Geo News programme Aapas ki Baat on Saturday.
He said it was evident from video why he had not been executed so far but now it has been decided that he would not be executed. He would be spared till the ongoing operation was in progress and produced positive results, Sethi added.
According to Sethi, sources say Musharraf, who used the MQM most, sent a message to the military establishment, saying the party should not be treated harshly as it may be required in the days to come. But the response he received is that he should keep himself away from the matter and avoid giving advice about the course of action. He said the government had nothing to do with the stopping of his execution as he was in army custody at Machh Jail in Balochistan, adding that the decision had been made in Rawalpindi.
According to Sethi, two people opted to launch a propaganda campaign because of the direct allegations levelled by Altaf. The military leadership has decided to take tough action against them and make many things public notwithstanding the close relationship and alliance of the previous hierarchy with the MQM. The army will neither take any political side nor accept interference.
The video message is only meant to bring MQM to a defensive position and has no legal value. An MQM delegation had met Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and asked for quashing the death sentence, after the government lifted the moratorium on executions. They are in a fix as they had been defending and trying to protect Saulat but now calling him a liar.
Sethi said according to his sources, the news item about placing the names of four MQM leaders on ECL was not true because there was no law to justify the move. The militarys stance concerning the PPP and the MQM was that no hurdle would be tolerated in the war against terror and the response might also include imposition of governors rule, an option that would not be exercised if the cleanup process went unhampered, he added.
Sethi said the military was of the opinion that the people involved in criminal activities and terrorism acts were their only target, and not them (political parties).
He said Saulat had also mentioned the name of Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad in his statement. The decision about tendering resignation was in the hands of Ebad about whom questions were also raised at the time of his appointment during the Musharraf regime because of a large number of cases (over 50) registered against him. Later, these cases and those (over 8,000) against other MQM workers were, however, quashed, he added.
According to Sethi, Ebad has been trying to make the party leadership to avoid the past practices but to no avail. It was Asif Ali Zardari and Rehman Malik who saved him at least twice or thrice when there was a discussion within the MQM to remove him from the party. It would be better for Ebad to leave the office, if his party doesnt change its attitude and continue backing the criminals.
The MQM would have to hand over the criminals to the army, as it cannot be run as per the previous mechanism because, on one hand, it is a political party and, on the other, it has a militant wing. Also, all the party leaders one way or the other are in contact with them (criminals). If Zardari or Ebad tried to protect the criminal elements of MQM then they would be dealt with strictly.
About the meeting between Chaudhry Nisar and the British high commissioner, Sethi said the UK knew that Pakistan had solid proof against Altaf and had been asking for handing them over, but the request would not be accepted. During the previous military leadership no action was taken against Saulat who, in fact, enjoyed special protection during Musharraf period, while the next leadership followed the same policy, he added.
That was the reason, Sethi said, Altaf regularly chanted that they are with the army; however, the things have changed now.
He said it was a sad fact that the MQM, despite being the sole representative of middle class with being liberal and secular nature, was facing serious allegations because of the criminals.
Those accused of being involved in Dr Imran Farooq murder case are not being handed over to the UK as the military have asked the Britons to first deport the Baloch separatists who are enjoying the government facilities in the UK to create lawlessness in Balochistan.
