On a side note, it seems quite a dangerous phenomenon, since there is a rise in global temperatures and the permafrost of Siberia is melting. May be it caused some serious expansion of gases within some craters in earth, due to temperature rise, causing these explosions, which are so massive that they could be heard 60 miles away.

Well, it might happen this way, might be not.
But there are other scientific explanations which do support this "fait accompli", like the entropy theory. You know energy moves from the region of its higher concentration towards lower conentration (like osmosis), but one day, there will eventually be an equilibrium on both sides and the energy will stop flowing. On that day, all the forces, including the gravity will vanish or stop acting.
Another possibility is supported by the blackholes. Perhaps, one day earth may get into the vortex of a blackhole and that day, the forces of the blackhole will overcome the forces/energies on earth.
Third possibility is that (if Newtonian theory of gravitation is correct) that the sun is blazing and loosing its mass, converting it into energy of light. So, one day, the mass of the sun will decrease so much that its gravitation will not be able to hold the earth in its orbit. Then we will roam about in the space and who knows, perhaps we collide with another celestial body?
One last possibility is that of a great celestial body, coming close to earth so much so that its gravitational force overcomes the gravitation of Sun on the earth. Therefore, that celestial body will take earth into its orbit and move away from the sun, in its own direction of motion. Then no one knows our fate. On that day, when the earth will be losing orbit of the sun, it is possible that the earth's own gravitational force will change and it may become so weak that the bodies like the mountains start flying in the air, as the tectonic plates beneath the earth's crust will also break by the motion of the celestial body taking earth in its orbit (or taking it out of the orbit of the sun).
But I guess it is also mentioned somewhere either in Quran or Hadith that before teh final hour, the most prominent of the signs will be that the Sun will rise halfway on the sky and then will settle back in the east. This makes me think that there might be something happening with the celestial motions. And only Allah (SWT) Knows Best.
Apologies for the boredom I created due to such a looooong comment.
But the crux is that anyone who knows only a little bit of science, knows that the final hour will come, either this way or that.
