Burying the hatchet: Imran calls up Altaf, agrees to work together

ISLAMABAD: After years of political animosity, Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Altaf Hussain’s Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) appear to be coming closer as the two leaders held their first telephonic conversation and exchanged good will with each other.

In a rare move, Imran Khan called Altaf Hussain on Saturday and appreciated the ‘bold’ stance taken by the latter on national issues, separate but identical statements issued by media offices of both the parties said.

The two leaders agreed to bury their past differences and vowed to work together for the betterment of the country, the statements added.

PTI and MQM have been considered staunch rivals in the past, at times holding public rallies and resorting to personal attacks against each other’s leadership.

Recently, however, the two parties have come closer, mainly due to back-channel efforts by some common friends and political leaders in Pakistan, observers say.

The second-tier leadership of the two parties prepared the ground that culminated in direct interaction between their leaders.

During their conversation, both sides discussed common agenda points and vowed to work together to achieve their goals.

Altaf Hussain has recently started taking a tough stance in public, on issues like unabated US predator attacks inside Pakistani territory, release of CIA contractor Raymond Davis and Dr Aafia Siddiqui.

The same issues take centre-stage in Imran Khan, and several right-wing parties’, political agendas.

PRESS RELEASE - Conversation between Chairman Imran Khan and MQM leader Altaf Hussain - Rabia Zia
(London 20-03-2011) Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Mr Imran Khan's conversation with MQM leader Altaf Hussain on March 19 2011 has resulted in a lot of feedback from PTI members. There is a lot of concern on why this conversation took place especially as PTI is the only party that has filed a case against MQM and its atrocities in Pakistan Karachi.

It is important to note that PTI is not forming any alliances with MQM and that this was just a conversation around issues - Raymond Davis / Dr Aafia / Drone attacks. PTI is talking to everyone in the greater national interest including Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam (JUI), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Labour party, Sindh National Front (SNF), Mumtaz Bhutto's party etc so that we can expose these US stooges on Raymond Davis, Dr Aafia and the Drone attacks.
PTI has not changed its stance on MQM's responsibility for the breakdown of law and order in Karachi. The telephonic exchange was based on the national issues and it is a credit to our leadership and Imran Khan's clear stance that even our biggest opponents and critics are in agreement with a vision of Imran Khan's Pakistan and his agenda based on sovereignty and independence of our policies.
In the past during the Justice movement, PTI was working with a number of parties i.e. PML-N, JI etc for the same cause. It was not an alliance of the parties. During the Restoration of Democracy movement, PML-N, PPP and PTI with other parties were together - again for a cause. In the Long March to restore the Judges of the Supreme Court, our party PTI, PML-N, JI other parties except PPP were all on the same page. With Altaf Hussain it was a first telephonic contact. Again NO alliance but a discussion on common issues.
In the coming days, the Chairman will be addressing the concerns of the party members through media interaction and explaining his stance to everyone.
In politics we cannot break all communication even with the worst of our opponents. If we trust our leader, then we need to trust him implicitly which includes letting him exercise his judgement on some sensitive issues. We can and should have our own opinion and we can disagree with the Chairman and provide him with our feedback, but we need to trust him.

Chairman's talk with Altaf Hussain only to discuss Pakistan's Sovereignity: Akbar S. Babar
The MQM Quaid Mr. Altaf Hussein had repeatedly desired to talk with the PTI Chairman Mr. Imran Khan in the recent past. The MQM Leader's desire for a telephone conversation with the PTI Chairman was communicated to the PTI Sindh Leadership. The PTI requested clarity on the following issues before such a contact could be established:

1. The MQM's stance on the Raymond Davis issue;
2. The MQM's stance on the release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui,
3. The MQM's stance on the drone attacks; and
4. The overall issue of the present state of Pakistan's sovereignity.

PRESS RELEASE - PTI UK PROTESTS AGAINST THE PRE-PLANNED RELEASE OF RAYMOND DAVIS - Rabia Zia

(London 19-03-2011) - PTI UK (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf - Movement for Justice) organized a protest outside Pakistan High Commission, London, on March 19 2011 against the pre-planned release of Raymond Davis wherein the PPP government engaged all stakeholders in delivrering Raymond Davis to the Americans as per the 'deal'. Raymond Davis, the American, murdered two Pakistani citizens and indirectly killed two other people namely Ubaid-ur-Rahman who was killed by the car being driven by Raymond Davis's accomplices and the wife of one of the murdered victims who committed suicide.
There was a good turn out on the day, especially as the protest was organized in one day. There were a lot of slogans and speeches. The speakers who expressed their discontent with the government including PML-N. Ubaid-ur-Rahman's brother Mamood Rahman also joined us at the protest. He said that they had refused money offered to them by the government. All they want is justice and they want to know who killed their brother and why. They want to know the reasons on why the killers have not been apprehended.
PTI is the only part in the UK who took the initiative to call this protest and we are proud to be the first ones in highlighting and escalating all national issues. A petition outlining the following demands was handed over to the High Commission of Pakistan by Khwaja Imtiaz, Akram Dhareeja, Rabia Zia and Qawi Awan.

 • Has the Pakistan governmnet given this blood money as the USA has denied giving this blood money
 • Why was Raymond Davis;'s motives for being in Pakistan not investigated especially after President Obama pubilcally defended Raymond Davis
 • Why was Raymond Davis not tried in the court of law in Pakistan for spying
 • Why was Raymond Davis not tried for the possession of arms
 • Why were his partners in crime who killed a third person not tried for murder
 • Why did Pakistan not make a deal to swap Dr Aafia for Raymond Davis especially as Dr Aafia has been sentenced for 'attempted' murder for 86 years by the US courts
 • Is this 'deal' similar to the drone attacks 'deal' – no questions asked on the murders of innocent Pakistanis
During the protest it was highlighted that letting go a murderer is a humiliating experience for the people of Pakistan and is clear that the elected government of Pakistan and all its allies have failed the nation and have put their personal interests above the national interest. All denounced the government for not taking a stand for its own people on atrocities being committed on its soil. People also spoke about the enormous amount of blood money given to the families in shape of bribery and they wanted to know who all were involved in this deal.
All speakers emphasized that only Imran Khan and PTI can bring a change as he is the only leader who is free of corruption and takes a stand for the people of Pakistan. it is about time that we as a nation, take a stand against injustice and against open '"sell out" by our own government and leaders. The government has told the nation the true worth of a Pakistani life - zero value. PTI and the people of Pakistan want answers and we will not rest till we get them. We demand that Raymond Davis should be returned to Pakistan to face trial for murder, for possessions of arms and for spying.
Please note that the chief causalities of the PPP Government and their autocratic rule is the People of Pakistan however the PPP Government cannot stop the change and cannot stop people from thinking and cannot stop Pakistan from moving towards the vision of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah.

We will be liberated, we will be a sovereign state and we will return the nations dignity and self respect with the RULE OF LAW.
We thank the local media for their support and coverage and we thank all those who made this protest a success especially the organizers. For pictures please goto Facebook 'ptiukofficial'.

Altaf, Imran warm to each other

Mumtaz Alvi
ISLAMABAD: In a rare development, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) self-exiled chief Altaf Hussain on Saturday telephoned Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan.

Altaf and Imran pledged to adopt a joint strategy in future on drone attacks, the Raymond Davis issue and other matters.

Talking to The News, PTI spokesman Tahir Jamil said the MQM leader was highly appreciative of Imran’s stand on the key national issues, including the recent release of CIA contractor Raymond Davis and drone strikes.

“Your stand on national issues is appreciable because you have made practical efforts to restore Pakistan’s sovereignty and national character,” he quoted the MQM leader as telling the PTI chairman, who also spoke highly of Altaf’s clear stand in his speech on the Davis issue, drone attacks in tribal areas and Dr Aafia Siddiqui.

Altaf was of the view that there was need for practical efforts to work for national pride and sovereignty by setting aside the bitterness of the past. Imran said national leaders should speak with one voice against drone attacks and the killing of innocent Pakistanis in such barbaric acts.

The PTI chairman, the spokesman said, castigated the rulers in Islamabad and in Punjab for failing to rise to the occasion and leaving Pakistan at the time of trial and difficulty.

Both Altaf and Imran agreed to remain in touch in their efforts to adopt a collective line of action on all the important national issues.

In the recent past, the two parties have been locked in a bout of allegations and counter-allegations and it is widely believed that the latest development would help bring MQM and PTI close to each other. The PTI spokesman said it was the maiden telephonic contact between the two leaders.

Thing is if one some issues MQM and PTI can support each other then they should support each other on the issues.

Like if MQM said something +ve then then that should be appreciated and Imranonce again showed that he is more concerned about issues of the country rather than his personal ego
