The United Arab Emirates cancelled a meeting with Israeli and American officials to formalise normalisation, due to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's opposition to the US selling Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jets to Abu Dhabi, Axios reported.

Citing three anonymous sources, Israeli journalist Barak Ravid reported on Monday that Emirati officials abruptly cancelled a ceremonial meeting that was set to take place last Friday "indefinitely".

Abu Dhabi had been trying to purchase the advanced US-made jets, but American policy dictates that Israel must maintain its military superiority in the region.

Initial reports had indicated that Netanyahu had agreed to the F-35 sales after the UAE announced a deal to normalise relations with Israel earlier this month. But the Israeli premier voiced public opposition to the F-35 sale last week.

"The peace agreement with the UAE does not include any clauses on the matter, and the United States clarified to Israel that it will always safeguard Israel's qualitative edge," Netanyahu said.

Top Emirati diplomat Anwar Gargash told the Atlantic Council last week that acquiring the F-35s was a "legitimate" defence concern for Abu Dhabi, noting that the UAE had been trying to get the jets for six years.

"This is something on the table. We have legitimate requests that are there. We ought to get them… Now the whole idea of, you know, the state of belligerency or war with Israel will no longer exist, so I think it should be actually more easier," Gargash said.

The ceremonial signing of the deal with Israel in the presence of US officials was set to boost President Donald Trump's reelection campaign. It is not clear if the reported cancelling of the meeting will affect the normalisation agreement.

On Monday, Netanyahu reiterated his stance that the preliminary normalisation deal with the UAE did not include any agreement on arms sales.

"I don’t know of any arms deal that has been agreed upon. It may be contemplated; our position hasn’t changed," he said after meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

"But I also learned from Secretary Pompeo – heard again a very, very strong commitment that under all circumstances, the United States will ensure Israel’s qualitative edge. That has been proven to be true over four decades of peace with Egypt, two and a half decades of peace with Jordan."

For his part, Pompeo vowed to continue to bolster the UAE's defence capabilities while maintaining the Americcan commitment to Israel's so-called qualitative military edge.

"We have a 20-plus year security relationship with the United Arab Emirates as well, where we have provided them with technical assistance and military assistance," Pompeo said.

"We will now continue to review that process to continue to make sure that we’re delivering them with the equipment that they need to secure and defend their own people from this same threat, from the Islamic Republic of Iran as well."

UAE Minister of Endowments: Normalization with "Israel" is one of the values of the Islamic religion

The head of the UAE General Authority for Islamic Affairs and Endowments, Muhammad Al-Kaabi, described today, Monday, the agreement to normalize Emirati-Israeli relations under American auspices as a "courageous and historic" decision, despite strong Palestinian opposition to it.

According to the official Emirates News Agency, WAM, Al-Kaabi stressed that this agreement stems from the values of the Islamic religion, which calls for building bridges of cooperation and establishing relations with everyone regardless of their positions and religions.

Al-Kaabi claimed that his country is continuing its efforts to find a peaceful solution that protects people, achieves development and urbanization for this region, and preserves its stability, indicating that this is an affirmation of the firm leadership approach.

He added, "This is evidence of the wise leadership's belief in the necessity of honoring the human being, the sanctity of protecting the sacred things, and its sincere desire to instill the values of hope in the region's youth, and to reinforce their peace values."

And last week, US President Donald Trump announced that the UAE and Israel had reached a formal agreement to normalize relations between them, making the UAE the first Gulf country to normalize its relations with Israel, in clear violation of the Arab Peace Initiative.

The agreement was met with widespread Palestinian condemnation from the leadership and prominent factions, such as the Palestine Liberation Organization, Hamas, Fatah and Islamic Jihad.

In a statement, the Palestinian leadership considered the Emirati decision a betrayal of Jerusalem, Al-Aqsa, and the Palestinian cause.

It is scheduled that Jared Kushner, senior White House adviser, will visit Israel and Gulf countries during the first week of next month, as part of his efforts to persuade and encourage more countries to join the UAE in normalizing its relations with Israel.

The visit includes the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and occupied Jerusalem, to meet with the Emirati Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

On Monday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will visit Israel, then go to the United Arab Emirates to reinforce the normalization agreement, which was announced last week under US sponsorship.

Regardless of issues it is a very capable platform if UAE can get hands on it, its a successor to f-16 and Pakistanis are well aware of F-16 capabilities.

What I dont understand about Arabs and Gulf countries specifically is why dont they learn from history.

I remember in 1990s UAE wanted to place order for 200+ most advanced f-16 versions with US. But US objected to it because those F-16 were going to be flown by Pakistani pilots and US did not want Pakistani pilots to learn about the technology, AESA radars and other equipment in the most advance F-16 versions they were selling to UAE.

UAE still placed order for around 50 fighters because thats how many pilots they were able to train locally to fly them. But why didnt they use that money, pool it with other Gulf countries like Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi. Buy some technology from Russians, engines, radars and avionics from Europeans, hire some Pakistani, Indian, Russian and Chinese engineers and build their own plane with similar capability.

Now they are in same situation with US again. They have enough money together to create as good of a platform as F-35. I mean not even a cheap Russian or Chinese knock off... Even Turkey with a small budget is building its own European style 5th gen fighter.

Instead of training their own Emirati pilots, they can hire much more capable Pakistani pilots saving billions of dollars on training costs that Saudis are paying to train their duffer pilots in US who cant even fight properly in Yemen. They cant put Pakistani pilots in there due to restrictions from the US and European manufacturers.

well so much for the honey moon. although F35 is still prone to lots of errors. media has it big

This is basically a tribute/ ransom money that UAE/KSA pay to USA. In the past conquered nations have always paid tribute to the powerful as well so nothing new.
