Pakistan's Terrible Twilight by Nasir Ahmad.

Our Army was our most respected institution. This is so with most countries. This is perhaps so because members of no other institution pay such a price in the line of duty as the soldier does.
Also, it was the general belief that it was the army which was holding the country together. It was also believed that corruption had not made inroads into the army culture. That is why, each time the army took over, it did so to huge public applause.
This myth stands busted today. The army is seen as an organization like any other. It will take its pound of flesh the same as the others.
The army began to significantly lose its prestige with Musharraf's NRO. This formally legitimated theft. It was also a marker for the army to switch over and join the thieves.
This change got a considerable fillip when Kiyani became Army Chief. He was an out and out thief, and facilitated theft committed by his brothers. Raheel Sharif was not a thief, but was a very weak man. His reputation, which got fatally punctured by his handling of the Dawn Leaks scandal, was the product of Gen Asim Bajwa's exertions.
And then came Bajwa. He was one of the most liked generals, known to be positive, most helpful, and free of ego. Anyone could approach him and be assured of a sympathetic hearing.
What went against Bajwa was that he superseded Gen Ashfaq Nadim, who was universally recognised as by far the most outstanding officer under consideration to be promoted to lead the army. But this was as per tradition i.e the best officer has always been dumped.
However, what has very recently become public knowledge is the way Gen Bajwa became the Army Chief. And this picture is not pretty.
Apparently, retired Lt Gen Amjad Ijaz, Bajwa's father in law, was very thick with Nawaz Sharif and his sidekicks. It was his lobbying with Nawaz Sharif which turned the tables on Ashfaq Nadim, and Bajwa was picked. It is now well known that prior to Bajwa's promotion, Amjad Ijaz met Ishaq Dar in the presence of retired Maj Gen Afzal Janjua at Bari Imam and took an oath on behalf of his son in law, that the latter will always remain a faithful servant of the Sharif family.
Since this ill-fated promotion, Amjad Ijaz has pulled Bajwa's strings in case of every important decision taken by him, and those routed through him.
Very early on it also became known that Amjad Ijaz had formed a consortium of "consultants" with a few retired grade 22 bureaucrats who were operating out of the offices of Shujaat Azim. This man is a businessman, and a good friend of Choudhary Munir, a close friend of the Sharif family.
And this "consultancy" was little more than a front to gather dirty money for favours done.
Early on Bajwa's real game was not known. But when Nawaz Sharif's cohorts began abusing the army high command quite openly, and no action was taken by Bajwa, it went down very badly with his command. Suspicions were aroused among them about his real intent. But the moment Nawaz Sharif was allowed to flee the country, belief became general that this had been arranged by Amjad Ijaz. And further, that this had been done in exchange of a colossal amount of money.
The credibility and the stock of the army high command began falling, both within its ranks, and among the public. But in parallel, Imran Khan's stock also began to fall primarily because of poor governance.
Then in about mid 2021, some high profile overseas visitors came calling on Bajwa. What briefing Bajwas given by them is yet to be known. But after this, D.G ISI, Gen Faiz Hamid was posted out. Imran Khan smelled a rat and tried his best to stay the posting, but failed. Rumours were let afloat that Imran Khan's days were numbered. Najam Sethi's private meetings were one source of these rumours, before he went in "prediction" mode in early 2022. Amjad Ijaz and his circle began dropping overt hints that Imran Khan had failed.
Sensitive ears could feel a change brewing.
Beginning 2022 added steam under the brew could be easily felt by most. Donald Lu's memo to Pak Ambassador in Washington was the last straw. Bajwa allowed Zardari to buy a few PTI members, and then ordered Imran's coalition partners to sink the PTI and the needful was done.
Bajwa was certain about a significant fall in PTI's support. Without this certainty there would have been no coup. But the public reaction to the coup was nothing short of stunning. People all over Pakistan came out in protest against it in numbers as they had never gathered before in the history of Pakistan.
In the beginning, the protest was not so much in favour of Imran Khan, as it was to register the loathing which people harboured against the thieves---the Zardaris and the Sharifs. But within days this loathing morphed into outright support for Imran.
Bajwa could have brought immediate calm to his country had he used his considerable weight to push through immediate elections. But he could not. He was paid good money to bring down Imran's government. The Sharifs had made the payment. And they held the proof. Bajwa's addled reserves of patriotism were no match for the fear of being exposed. He could yet have stood for Pakistan and its people. He chose instead to stand with those who had looted and despoiled it.
Bajwa and his senior generals have no idea how deeply the people of Pakistan, and indeed their own command, loathe them. The more insecure the generals feel, the more they dig in their heels, and the closer they take their country, which they are oath-bound to defend, to its ultimate fall.
THIS IS WHAT IMRAN KHAN AND THE BEFUDDLED PEOPLE OF PAKISTAN NEED TO UNDERSTAND.
This is a most tragic twilight for a country born of hope, which had depended on its army for most of its seventy five years, to salvage it from whatever may befall it.

On social media, Bajwa is despised like no one else. Any post by DG ISPR on twitter only attracts negative comments and most comments are about Bajwa colluding with the crooks in the removal of Imran Khan. It is shocking how the army's (more specifically Bajwa and his direct reports) reputation has plummeted after recent events.

Thanks to Bajwa and company, they have broken the myth of the army (generals) being the most respected and honored institution for every Pakistani.
Imran Khan has opened the eyes of a sleeping nation, whether it be Judiciary, army, or corrupt politicians, the public is now well aware of thier nefarious designs

I said many months before.. Peoples unconditional remance with Pak Army is finished due to Bajwa.
To restore it..how many years needed?..I don't know..and my heart is bleeding when I say above.

I think the real fatal stab on the heart of this myth would be when People all over Pakistan would come out on 30th November to celebrate Bajwas departure... that would be the day Establishment would know that they have been exposed completely naked, in bed with Zardari and Sharifs!!

Well written article as well... if the story of Bajwa's father in law is true!

There is no need to have unconditional romance with Pak army and no need to restore it. Army is just another institute like Police, Fire fighters, Health (Hospitals), Education (School/College/Universities). If other institutes does not deserve unconditional romance then why army? Fire fighters do the same level of job (i.e. they put their life in danger fighting fire) as army. If someone needed to have unconditional romance and respect, it should be the teachers (who teaches correctly and build nation's character). Army should be considered another institute serving the public and thats it.
