It does sound strange. I have also heard of people who started calling themselves Syed after moving to a new area. However, based on the “shooder” theory, it is difficult to say that there are absolutely no Syeds in India and Pakistan as some of them can put forward a family tree. Like the shooder explaination, a family tree may not be a conclusive evidence. Nonetheless, there are reports of Syeds migrating to Central Asian countries and if that can be considered as a criterion, there are some in Pakistan who share central asian features. Perhaps, they came along with the invaders. What you say has also been somewhat supported by a scientific study. However, as always, there were statistical limitations. Probably, it is also unlikely that there are absolutely no Syeds in the subcontinent. If there are any, their percentage could be very small. Therefore, unless all the Syed claimants have had the Y chromosome tested, it is difficult to say anything conclusively.

I see your point. However, epigenetics, and other factors such as offsprings from the natives can play a part in creating looks. Therefore, Y chromosome, albeit slightly mutable, is still a better indicator of someone’s geneology, and tests which determine it are better in this regard. Furthermore, the royal family of Jordan which claim to be Hassani Syeds are now the 43rd generation. According to my understanding, their geneology is historically established. Therefore, even if there are Syeds in Pakistan and India, they could be very small percentage wise, but could still be bigger than 10-20 families as every new generation would have a seperate household .

Also, I think we can all agree that irrespective of one’s geneology, the type of behaviour displayed by the lady, according to my understanding, goes against the teachings of of the prophet Muhammad PBUH as she has aligned herself with the oppressors.
