Why do we read Quran, even if we can't understand a single Arabic word????

This is a beautiful story.

An old American Muslim lived on a farm in the mountains of eastern Kentucky with his young grandson. Each morning Grandpa was up early sitting at the kitchen table reading his Quran. His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to imitate him in every way he could.

One day the grandson asked, "Grandpa! I try to read the Quran just like you but I don't understand it, and what I do understand I forget as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the Qur'an do?"

The Grandfather quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied, "Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water.

The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out before he got back to the house. The grandfather laughed and said, "You'll have to move a little faster next time," and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the basket was empty before he returned home. Out of breath, he told his grandfather that it was impossible to carry water in a basket, and he went to get a bucket instead.

The old man said, "I don't want a bucket of water; I want a basket of water. You're just aganot trying hard enough," and he went out the door to watch the boy try in.

At this point, the boy knew it was impossible, but he wanted to show his grandfather that even if he ran as fast as he could, the water would leak out before he got back to the house. The boy again dipped the basket into river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandfather the basket was again empty. Out of breath, he said, "See Grandpa, it's useless!"

"So you think it is useless?" The old man said, "Look at the basket."

The boy looked at the basket and for the first time realized that the basket was different. It had been transformed from a dirty old coal basket and was now clean, inside and out.

Son, that's what happens when you read the Qur'an . You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read it, you will be changed, inside and out when you read time by time . That is the work of Allah in our lives...."

There is no doubt that reading Quraan even without understanding is Barkat. Our emphasis should be on reading Quraan with understanding, Allah says in Quraan:

(Quraan, 54:17)
Translation by Yusuf Ali:
And We have indeed made the Qur'an easy to understand and remember: then is there any that will receive admonition?

Translation by Shakir:
And certainly We have made the Quran easy for remembrance, but is there anyone who will mind?

Translation by Pickthal:
And in truth We have made the Qur'an easy to remember; but is there any that remembereth?

Translation by Mohsin Khan:
And We have indeed made the Qur'an easy to understand and remember; then is there any one who will remember (or receive admonition)?

FYI, There is a very good website which have translation of Quraan in English and other languages: http://www.searchtruth.com/. In case of English, you may find translation by 4 different translators.

The Quran is easy to understand and remember – contrary to what we have learned all our lives that we need an ‘Alim’ or ‘Tafsir’ to help us learn the Quran.

The Quran was created by Allah ,our Creator and Sustainer. It was then revealed to our beloved Prophet Mohammad (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) for the entire human race. The target readers of this book are human beings of different mental levels. This fact itself is the greatest miracle of Quran. Any other book of human creation has a specific target reader. For example a science textbook for a primary class student will be written in such a way that primary students easily understand it. In the same way a book on anatomy for a student of medicine will be meaningful for a medical student. Each book is written at a different level. On the contrary Allah has created Quran: as “ A Book for All”. It would be wrong to say that , “It contains something for everybody ,” rather “It contains everything for everybody.”

The basic requirement of the reader of Quran is that its contents be understood. It is our basic duty to study it and understand it. Ignorance of Arabic language should not be a barrier for us. Quran is a book that has been studied and researched the most. There are many beautiful translations available in English and other languages. We should earnestly try to read these translations. Everybody and anybody can “read” the Quran. By “read” is implied that we read it in a language we are comfortable in. It is because the main aim should be to understand the meaning.

And We have indeed made the Qur'an easy to understand and remember: then is there any that will receive admonition?
Qur’aan; 54:17

Those to whom We have sent the Book study it as it should be studied: They are the ones that believe therein: Those who reject faith therein,- the loss is their own.
Qur’aan; 2:121

Do they not then earnestly seek to understand the Qur'an, or are their hearts locked up by them?
Qur’aan; 47:24

So have We made the (Qur'an) easy in thine own tongue, that with it thou mayest give Glad Tidings to the righteous, and warnings to people given to contention.
Qur’aan; 19:97
:

My understanding on this issue is that. Islam is a very logical religion. Allah almighty knows the human beings inside out as He is their creator. Islam categorize things as mandatory, Sunnah and mustahib.
Mandatory things impact the society as a whole and avoiding them is dangeros for human. Sunnah impacts the individual and society in a sense that it helps an individual and the society to sustain. So fard can not be avoided at all and practicing sunnah is very useful but skiping it once or twice is OK but not advisable. Skiping it totally is again dangerous.

Now comes the mustahib. The acts for which Barbkah is promised. There are many things that are minor, not doing them is OK but doing them has great wisdom in it. Allah knew that not every body on earth will know Arabic and will understand it. So if understanding quran is made the only way of getting close to Allah, then people who do not know arabic but yet are muslims will not read it and eventually they will loose the text in their society. But if Barakah is promised, they will keep reading it for the sake of Barakah and the actual contents will stay with them for ever and some of them will eventaully learn arabic and will understand it.

So reading quran without understanding it is a mean of preservation of the actual text and that is why so much Barakat for it. Memorizing it without knowing it is one step forward in its preservation, and hence a lot of rewards for it. The final and ultimate goal of a momin is to understand it by himself and follow the guidance. So all of us should try to understand it rather than just read it.

Understading it is very important. If you want to know what happens when people do not understand and just follow others for an easy way out, read the thread on this forum about the death of Propher Muhammad PBUH. We have the book but we do not have time to read, we just want to lay around and follow somebody. Imagine if our ancestors were not reading the arabic text without understanding it, what we would be now. We would have created multiple versions of Islam based on what we learnt from our elders becuase we never had the original text. Even with the original text we just want to talk about difference and do not want to go and read and learn arabic.

Finally, I met a Islamic scholar and healer in our mosque. In his lecture he told us that the words of Quran have a specific effect on human brain. He is doing a research along with a Neuro surgeon in USA, in which using a new radio technology they are diagnosing the effect of the words on quran on people suffering with mental disease. He believe that many mental illness can be cured by just reading quran and this book has such an astounding impact on human brain. The person listening to it does not even have to be a muslim to have that pleasing impact. He also showed a letter from a Neurosurgeon with at least 5 degrees in that area, who has written a letter of recommendation for him. Praising him for his skills and accepting that he cured such phychic patients that modern surgery was failed to address. WaAllah alam. But I believe in it with my heart and soul.
