Can Ghee Butter Actually Help Improve Heart Health?
By Amy Morris March 25, 2014

Many health experts since the 1970’s have utterly condemned saturated fats and have led us all to believe that when we consume them, we are hurting ourselves by increasing our risks of developing major health problems like cardiovascular disease.
But emerging evidence suggests that not all saturated fat is made equally, and not all of it is going to be bad for us either.

France Has Lowest Cardiovascular Disease Levels

Dr. Aseem Malhotra is out to prove saturated fat can be healthy and to back this up has announced that the biggest saturated fat consumption goes on in France and France has the lowest incidence of cardiovascular disease in the world[1].
He also goes on to say that the food industry has wrongly replaced saturated fats with so called low fat foods that have had the fat content replaced with sugar or artificial sugar and refined carbohydrates – all of which have now been found to time and time again cause health problems.
What Is Ghee Butter?

Ghee is a type of clarified butter that is actually 60% saturated fat and is very popular in Indian cuisine and by the Ayurvedic medical fraternity.
Ghee is produced in such a way that removes most of the moisture, by heating the butter to a certain temperature, holding it there where in this time moisture can evaporate. After this is completed, the milk solid has started to caramelize which is then removed by straining. It is this caramelized part that goes on to become the best quality Ghee on the market and favored in Indian cuisine.

Limited Research but Consistent Praise for Ghee

Although the amount of research that has been carried out on Ghee is somewhat limited, every test that has been conducted has produced favorable results. From these tests it has been indicated that Ghee can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease when consumed in excessive amounts, which equates to 3 tablespoons or more a day, but when moderate amounts were consumed, 1 to 2 tablespoons per day, Ghee was shown to actually help lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, especially when any other fats in the diet come from plants or plant oils[2].

Health Benefits of Ghee Butter

  • An anti-inflammatory agent
  • Improves the health of arteries
  • Enhances your metabolism
  • Boosts immune system health
  • Friendly for those who are Lactose intolerant
  • Aids digestion
Ayurvedic Medicinal Uses

Ayurveda is an Indian medicine system that originated over 3,000 years ago. Ghee has been used ever since then and is often used in many of the medications created in this medical system.
Ghee is also reported to have the following health benefits according to Ayurvedic teachings;

  • As a massage oil promoting detoxification
  • For rejuvenating “ojas” – the body’s life force
  • As an aphrodisiac
  • For nourishing tissue and nerves in the brain
  • As a wound dressing
  • As a treatment for eye disorders (including glaucoma)
Don’t be scared to Ghee up Your Life

We have compiled a list of health benefits above that are a combination of scientific fact and anecdotal. The only way to decide if ghee is good for your health is to make your own mind up based on both sides presented, and to experiment with Ghee by adding it to your diet.
Whatever side you choose to take, mother nature never lets us down, and I would be more inclined to choose ghee butter, a natural produce, than say margarine.

I think moderate use of desi ghee by those who are active in life is ok. Those who lead a sedentary life style should avoid it like a plague.

The banaspati ghee is nothing but death. Don't even touch it with a 10 foot pole. While preparing this ghee nickle is used as a catalyst so that liquid vegetable oil solidifies and give a white ghee like appearance. That nickle is the main cause of heart attacks and hardening of arteries.

[h=1]The Health Benefits of Using Ghee (Clarified Butter)[/h] By Andrea Crisp, October 22, 2013
ghee-recipe-instructions-DIY-e1389993312911.jpg

[h=2]Ghee and Its Benefits: When you think of butter, you probably picture that rich, creamy medium you cook many of your favorite meals in; but not all butter looks, acts or tastes the same. Ghee or clarified butter, for example, is what you get when you remove the water and the milk solids, resulting in a pure butterfat.
[/h]
When butter is cooked long enough for the water in the butter to completely evaporate and for the milk solids to brown and produce a nutty flavor, you get a butter product called ghee. Ghee has a long history in Indian culture-and many other parts of the world!-for its use not only in meal preparation, but in holistic remedies as well. If you’ve never tried ghee, you may want to consider it for one of these delicious or healthy applications:

Use ghee to fight inflammation: Ghee has been shown to reduce leukotriene secretion and reduce prostaglandin. Prostaglandin levels and leukotriene secretion both play a role in inflammation, which can not only lead to unpleasant physical reactions (redness, swelling, itchiness, etc.), but it can also accelerate the aging process.

Use ghee if you’re lactose or casein intolerant: The method of clarifying butter to turn it into ghee removes most of the lactose and casein contained in butter. Many of those who are lactose or casein intolerant can enjoy ghee without any negative reactions.
Use ghee for a healthier butter choice: Although saturated fats, commonly found in butter products, should be consumed in moderation, ghee butter has been linked to decreased cholesterol levels in lab trials. Other butter products, such as margarine, are hydrogenated and have been shown to contribute to increased cholesterol levels, a leading cause in heart disease.

Use ghee to boost your daily dose of antioxidants: Ghee contains carotenoids and vitamins A and E. These antioxidants fight free radicals and promote skin cell growth, good vision and immune system health, as well as reduce the risk of certain cancers and heart disease.

Use ghee to boost your micronutrient intake: Ghee is excellent source of vitamin K2 and CLA, nutrients that aren’t found in very many other foods. Vitamin K2 may help prevent calcification of the arteries by activating the body’s system that removes calcium from the arteries to deposit it where it’s supposed to be, in the bones. Then there’s CLA, which is a special kind of fat that may provide anti-oxidant benefits and help promote a healthy metabolism.

Use ghee to increase the effectiveness of some herbs: Ghee helps transport the medicinal properties of some herbs, when ingested, to organs and cells. Some herb mixtures used in Ayurveda (the Hindu system of holistic medicine) that contain ghee have been shown to enhance memory, increase the body’s wound healing ability and display anticonvulsant and hepatoprotective (liver-protective) properties.

Use ghee for flavor: Ghee’s nutty and intense flavor gives it a unique flair in the world of butters. Enjoy ghee on your popcorn without worrying about the soggy factor-the lack of water in ghee keeps the kernels dry! Rice and vegetables also complement ghee’s flavor and texture well, but you can try ghee on any food in your plant-based diet for a strong kick of buttery, nutty sweetness!

Use ghee for cooking: Ghee has a high smoke point, meaning it can be cooked at high temperatures without burning. Use ghee to fry or saut your favorite foods to produce flavorful dishes, sans the singe!

MYTH: All butter products are bad for your health.
3_052_Myths_GHEE.jpg

By Kulreet Chaudhary, MD, Neurologist and Maharishi Ayurveda Expert

FACT: Ghee, which is clarified butter, actually has positive health benefits. Ghee has been successfully used for medicinal purposes in ayurveda, the traditional medical system of India, for millennia.

Ghee can be prescribed as cooking oil as part of an ayurvedic diet, in skin creams for rashes or just as an anti-aging regimen, and as part of an herbal mixture to remedy a multitude of conditions from digestive disorders to neurological conditions.

Ghee is also known for its ability to remove toxins and is used to remove deeply seeded impurities in the organs as a preparation for the ayurvedic seasonal detox program, Panchakarma.

Animal studies have shown that ghee can have a beneficial impact on cholesterol, unlike traditional butter. Of course, it is still recommended that ghee be used in moderation.

Just switching your stick of butter for a jar of ghee could make you healthier while you continue to enjoy that buttery taste.

Thank you very much for explaining your view point. THe evidence to support the use of Ghee and butter is scarce but evidence to supportthe use of Olive oil is overwhelming.
Allah says in the quran:

olive-2_thumb.jpg

“And a tree (olive) that springs forth from Mount Sinai, that grows oil, and (it is a) relish for the eaters.” [Surah al-Muminoon 23:20].

Eat of [each of] its fruit when it yields and give its due [zakah] on the day of its harvest. And be not excessive. Indeed, He does not like those who commit excess. [Surah al-Anaam, 6:141]

I love Ghee kay purthey. I am not saying that Ghee is not good. In moderate amout real butter and real ghee is good for health. Problem occurs when we start eating too much of it.

Butter is great for testosterone production as well ! Anyone here into weight training and havnt tried it yet, give it a shot n see what I mean. Moderation is the key though, so go easy on it.
Dont fall for that 'switch to low fat diet' & fat makes you fat nonsense, its too old now. Avoid or cut down sugar & salt in half n you're good. I regularly intake large amounts of olive oil, coconut oil & butter n can still lose weight with them.

Anything in moderation is good.
While using Butter on a toast you don't have to put a 1/2 inch layer of the Butter just a thin layer on a toast will be helpfull for taste-buds.
There are pro and cons of everything used for cooking.
Our friend @Sngilani made a good point about use of olive oil for cooking, it should not be used for high heat frying foods though.

In cooking, the smoke point of an oil or fat is the temperature at which under defined conditions enough volatile compounds are emerged from the oil that a bluish smoke becomes clearly visible. At this temperature the concentration of volatile compounds such as water, free fatty acids but also short-chain degradation products of oxidation come up from the oil. The smoke point is not giving the temperature when the oil is decomposed and possibly toxicological relevant compounds are formed.

The smoke point for an oil varies widely depending on origin and refinement.[SUP][1][/SUP] The smoke point of an oil does tend to increase as free fatty acid content decreases and degree of refinement increases.[SUP][2][/SUP][SUP][3][/SUP] Heating oil produces free fatty acid and as heating time increases, more free fatty acids are produced, thereby decreasing smoke point. It is one reason not to use the same oil to deep fry more than twice.[SUP][1][/SUP] Intermittent frying has a markedly greater effect on oil deterioration than continuous frying.[SUP][4][/SUP]
Considerably above the temperature of the smoke point is the flash point, the point at which the vapors from the oil can first ignite when mixed with air.
The following table presents smoke points of various fats:

excessive use of ghee butter is not recommended in this article. u love to eat it then y did u dislike it?

I disliked it as it was promoting use of Ghee and butter which is not good, excessive use may be dangerous for many cardiac and diabetic patients. But Ghee poses no danger to cardiac health if the total fat intake is restricted to the prescribed limit (1 spoonful daily), researchers said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), fat should make up approximately 20 to 35 percent of your daily calories. CDC advises limiting total daily calories from saturated fat to a maximum of 10 percent. Eating high amounts of saturated fat is associated with increased risk of heart disease and diabetes.
