Sachin Tendulkar has announced his retirement after he plays his 200th test. Here is a statement from the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Date: 10 October 2013

MEDIA RELEASE

Sachin Tendulkar has contacted the President, BCCI, and has requested the BCCI to release the following statement to the Media, on his behalf:

"All my life, I have had a dream of playing cricket for India. I have been living this dream every day for the last 24 years. It's hard for me to imagine a life without playing cricket because it's all I have ever done since I was 11 years old. It's been a huge honour to have represented my country and played all over the world. I look forward to playing my 200th Test Match on home soil, as I call it a day.

I thank the BCCI for everything over the years and for permitting me to move on when my heart feels it's time! I thank my family for their patience and understanding. Most of all, I thank my fans and well-wishers who through their prayers and wishes have given me the strength to go out and perform at my best.

Though Tendulkar is from India our arch rivals, yet I regard him with high esteem reason being, despite having so much fame and world records I have never seen him behaving arrogantly, calm quite player, paragon of simplicity. Our players should learn from him.

SR Tendulkar what a player to watch in his hey days. One can argue about his paucity of words of appreciation for the greats among his contemporaries (and to some extent among his predecessors as well), his obsession with personal records and his inability to listen even a single word of critique with patience from someone well versed with the nuances of his game but overall the fact remain intact that Sachin was and still is a gem of a person and a legend par excellence.

All the best for the future little master and thanks a lot for the wonderful memories which spawned from the great artistry of your batting after all these years.

It's been an awesome career appreciated by all Cricket lovers around the world. Sachin, never involved in controversy through out his career has been a credit to the game that will be poorer with his departure. Personally, I think he can play on but can understand he wants to leave on a high instead of selectors omitting him for a younger face, that would be a tragic end to the career of the greatest batsman ever to have lived! Over the past 20 years there have been other greats like Inzamam, Lara and Ponting, all were in Sachin's shadow.

Famous quotes on Little master:

I Will See God When I Die But Till Then I Will See Sachin Tendulkar (A banner in Sharjah)

Do your crime when Sachin is batting, because even God is busy watching cricket (A placard at the Sydney Cricket Ground)

The nation comes to a standtill everytime Tendulkar is approaching hundred - Time magazine

I saw him playing on television and was struck by his technique, so I asked my wife to come look at him. Now I never saw myself play, but I feel that this player is playing much the same as I used to play, and she looked at him on television and said yes, there is a similarity between the two... high compactness, technique, stroke production... It all seemed to gel! - Sir Donald Bradman, widely regarded as the greatest batsman in the history of cricket.

I have seen God, he bats at no. 4 for India - Mathew Hayden

Technically, you can't fault Sachin. Seam or spin, fast or slow nothing is a problem - Geoffrey Boycott

If I'm to bowl to Sachin, I will bowl with my helmet on. He hits the ball so hard - Dennis Lillee

No Michael, as long as you walk off with your pride that's all you can do - Dennis Lillee to Michael Kasprowicz, when the latter asked if Lillee could see any weaknesses

The pressure on me is nothing compared to Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin, like God, must never fail. The crowd always expects him to succeed and it is too much pressure on him. But, he rarely disappoints them - Mark Waugh

There will never be another Sachin Tendulkar - Muttiah Muralitharan

The more I see him, the more I want to see him - Mohammad Azharuddin

There are 2 kind of batsmen in the world. One Sachin Tendulkar. Two all the others - Andy Flower

I never get tired during umpiring whenever Sachin is on crease - Rudy Kortzen

If he is not the best then I want to see the best - David Sheppard

In terms of technique and compactness, Tendulkar is the best - Desmond Haynes

I have delayed my shoots many times to watch Sachin bat - Amitabh Bachchan

I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing us to breathe the same air as you do - Shahrukh Khan

There was a big party where stars from bollywood and cricket were invited. Suddenly, there was a big noise, all wanted to see approaching Amitabh Bachhan. Then Sachin entered the hall and Amitabh was leading the queue to get a grab of the genius! - Shahrukh Khan

For cricket, Sachin is Maradona and Pele put together. Cricket will be a poorer sport when he quits the game. He is the first name that comes to mind the moment you ask who is the greatest - Allan Donald

His shot selection is superb, he just lines you up and can make you look very silly. Everything is right in his technique and judgement. There isn't a fault there. He is also a lovely guy - Allan Donald

You take Don Bradman away and he is next up, I reckon - Steve Waugh

It was one of the greatest innings I have ever seen. There is no shame being beaten by such a great player, Sachin is perhaps only next to the Don - Steve Waugh after being defeated in the Coca-Cola Cup finals in Sharjah

The last time I watched Sachin was last week when he was on his way to a spectacular 175 and once again I felt that I was watching a player who comes but once in a century. It can be said that he is the Bradman of our times and I do feel privileged to have played a lot of cricket against him - Steve Waugh

When he is in full flow, the mild-mannered boyish cricketer can look extremely intimidating. If there is a resonance, I find of myself in his batting, it is in that intent that he communicates - Viv Richards

I have never seen Bradman but heard people talk about him. But I tell you what, if Bradman could bat like this man does then he was dynamite. Players like Sachin deserve to be preserved in cotton wool - Viv Richards

I am one of those fortune people who have seen Bradman and Tendulkar bat in my lifetime and in my opinion Tendulkar is the best batsman I have seen in my life - Hanif Mohammed
On a train from Shimla to Delhi, there was a halt in one of the stations. The train stopped by for few minutes as usual. Sachin was nearing century, batting on 98. The passengers, railway officials, everyone on the train waited for Sachin to complete the century. This genius can stop time in India! - Peter Roebuck, Aussie journalist

Nothing bad can happen to us if we're on a plane in India with Sachin Tendulkar on it - Hashim Amla as he boards a flight

When you bowl at him you are not just trying to get him out, you are trying to impress him. "I want him to walk off thinking 'that Flintoff, he's all right isn't he? I feel privileged to have played against him - Andrew Flintoff

You might pitch a ball on the off stump and think you have bowled a good ball and he walks across and hits it for two behind mid wicket. His bat looks so heavy but he just waves it around like it's a toothpick - Brett Lee

I'll be going to bed having nightmares of Sachin just running down the wicket and belting me back over the head for six. He was unstoppable. I don't think anyone, apart from Don Bradman, is in the same class as Sachin Tendulkar. He is just an amazing player - Shane Warne

You have to watch India in India truly to appreciate the pressure that Sachin Tendulkar is under every time he bats. Outside grounds, people wait until he goes in before paying to enter. They seem to want a wicket to fall even though it is their own side that will suffer - Shane Warne

To me he will not just be remembered as a great player and a lovely human being, but as somebody who tried to learn Bengali for the last 14 years but never managed to do so! - Saurav Ganguly

Tendulkar has carried the burden of the nation for 21 years. It is time we carried him on our shoulders - Virat Kohli after the world cup triumph

Certainly the best Ive seen... People talk of (Sir Don) Bradman, but our generation and the ones immediately before us didnt get to see him... Sure, he has an astounding average (99.94), but of the cricketers Ive watched, Sachins the best - Waqar Younis

He can play that leg glance with a walking stick also - Waqar Younis

I dont know what to bowl at him. I bowled an inswinger and he drove me through covers of the front foot. Then I bowled an outswinger and he again punched through covers of the backfoot. He is the toughest batsmen I've bowled to. He should live long and score lots of runs, but not against Pakistan - Wasim Akram

Cricketers like Sachin come once in a lifetime, and I am privileged he played in my time. He is one of the best without any doubt and if I had to vote for the best sportsman of the century I would not hesitate for a second to give it to Sachin - Wasim Akram

He is cricket's greatest role model and continues to provide a great example for young aspiring cricketers on how to conduct oneself throughout one's career. - Gary Kirsten

I'll always remember Sachin as a quality cricketer, one of the best of all time - Glenn McGrath

Beneath the helmet, under that unruly curly hair, inside the cranium, there is something we don't know, something beyond scientific measure. Something that allows him to soar, to roam a territory of sport that, forget us, even those who are gifted enough to play alongside him cannot even fathom. When he goes out to bat, people switch on their TV sets and switch off their lives - BBC

Sachin is a genius. I'm a mere mortal - Brian Lara

He has been in form longer than some of our guys have been alive - Daniel Vettori

I am fortunate that I've to bowl at him only in the nets - Anil Kumble

The way he has taken on the role of India's greatest sporting ambassador... He has, among other things, inspired a generation and more to play cricket - Kapil Dev, India's 1983 World Cup winning captain
