RAWALPINDI: Awami Muslim League (AML) President Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Thursday said that he would defeat PML-N Quaid Muhammad Nawaz Sharif if he contested the upcoming bye-polls from NA-55.
He was talking to the media persons at Lal Haveli here during the visit of State Minister for Railway Faqir Muhammad Mangrio.
Ahmed that PML-N had no candidate to contest the bye- election, as one of its leaders, Javed Hashmi, vacated the seat after winning the seat, while another, Haji Pervaiz, was removed for making his nephew sit exam in his place in the intermediate examination.
He claimed that the PPP-led government would meet its logical end by the end of 2009. However, he desired that both PPP and PML-N governments complete their tenures. He ruled out military takeover saying that things were under the control of government. To support his claim, Ahmed said that the military could not fight in two battlefields at a time.
Commenting on Balochistan, he said riots in the province were not something new, as the same had happened in 1956, 1970 and 1990. He stressed the need for formation of a forum where leaders of all political and religious parties join their heads to develop a national consensus.
The AML chief said that he had suggested former president General (R) Pervez Musharraf to stay away from politics, as doing politics without uniform was impossible. He said if someone wanted to try Musharraf for abrogating the Constitution and other violations then they could do it, as their hands hand not been tied.
Sheikh Rashid said that Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was a seasoned politician and better than his elder brother Nawaz Sharif, as he (Shahbaz) had more courage to bear his opponents.
