KARACHI OR KACHRACHI
By
Syed Shakil Abbas Naqvi

Countries are known for their cities, culture, commitment, breviary, system or moral values. Pakistan came into beginning in 1947 when British rulers of that time divided India into two independent sovereign states, unfortunately, we fail to keep the country united and once again in 1971 Eastern province liberated themselves in the leadership of Sheikh Mujeeb ur Rehman. Bengal Desh is now emerging a developing economy in the area.

Pakistan was doing economically well federal, provincial and local governments were performing their duties under the umbrella of the constitution till 2008. In the result of national election in the country; a collation Government formed after Musharraf failed to perform its duties was the turning point towards the country’s progress and economy; the downfall started in the shape of load shedding, water crisis, law & order situation in the country, attacks on citizens and armed forces, financial corruption, misuse of authority as well as institutions and many more.

In the process Karachi the economic hub has neglected no attention was paid on municipal services, city’s infrastructure which was badly damaged, basic facilities include water, waste management, and garbage disposal become the victim of local and provincial politics. Mayor, Chairmen, and City Councilors have neither powers nor funds to do anything towards the betterment of municipal services to the general public. Garbage dumps, undisciplined traffic, pollution, environmental issues are everywhere in addition to overflowing sewage lines, broken electrical wires lying on the roads, broken pavements and electrical poles are painting a picture of a slim or a deserted city. Nobody ready or have an intention to own this city which is contributing a huge sum in national ex-chequer every year.

Karachi is not a metropolitan city but providing shelter, food, employment and other basic facilities to the people of Pakistan who is leaving there for a long time or coming here with an intention to leave permanently should come forward and ask the Government to take serious measures and make the city leave-able. To make the thing happen somebody had to take some applicable measures to solve the problem amicably. Involvement of experts, notables and citizens to share their suggestions and views sometimes produce unbelievable results.
· Committees consist of citizens, experts and notables are constituted to handle the problem which may come at the initial stage or at the time of implementation of projects

· Extra funds to be allocated in the forthcoming budgets and annual development plans (ADP) for at least ten years
· Sincere efforts to be made to contract downer agencies and Federal Government for their technical support and free flow funds for the projects in progress
· Provincial and local Governments should use their authority in Council of Common Interest (CCI) to get more shares on the basis of the population migrated from different provinces and now settled in Karachi
· Working Groups be made involving the general public on the issues needs urgent attention such as water, sewage, garbage disposal and waste management, health, education, women, child care, transit management, rainwater management etc.
· Political harmony is developed among the different political groups, parties, and religious organizations.

The purpose of above-mentioned suggestions does not mean to hurt anybody, group or organization it is just a humble effort to participate and start a discussion on the present issues and problems begin an old resident of Karachi leaving abroad from a long time.
