Sacrifice show-off or religious duty!
LAHORE: Sacrifice of animals on Eidul Azha has become more of a ritual of showing off and competition among families and localities, rather than the religious duty of well-off Muslims in society.
The basic objective of performing animals sacrifice for Almighty Allah is as per the sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who had been ordered to sacrifice his son.
However, nowadays animals are selected and purchased to show-off and to compete with relatives and friends.
And the message that ought to be taken from this practice is mostly forgotten.
As a result of the competition, elders and children belonging to less well-off families are hurt. Their inferiority complex increases, although the sacrifice is basically for the needy of society, and they are supposed to enjoy eating the meat on the festive occasion.
In distribution of sacrificial animals meat, religious teaching had made it clear that there should be three shares of the meat, one for the needy people, second for the relatives and friends and third for the family itself.
This teaching is violated because of the fact that some scholars have given edicts that a large family might enjoy the entire meat of an animal.
Resultantly, people store the meat in freezers and use it for days, week and months to come. In this way many people even dont show their willingness to sacrifice meat and distribute it among the needy and the poor remain deprived.
Exchange of leg pieces of sacrificial animals among relatives and family friends has also become a deep-rooted tradition in our society. This tradition has altogether altered the concept of making three equal shares of the meat, as the thigh pieces are separated from the entire meat.
On the other hand another fashion is emerging in elite and upper-middle-class teenagers, who dont want to eat meat of sacrificial animals. Some of them clearly say that they dont eat sacrificial animals meat, although it has been declared healthy.
The Islamic state system is based on building welfare state and welfare localities. The concept of sacrifice of animals is also based on dispersing the benefits to the deprived segments of society. Well-off families may enjoy eating meat through the year while the poor and needy segments of the society wait for the whole year for this occasion. So it is the duty of the rich and well-off to make this occasion full of joy and happiness for the deserving sections of society. shabbir sarwar
