SIGNS OF SORCERY - علاماتِ سحر
They followed what the evil ones gave out (falsely) against the power of Solomon: The disbelievers were... but the evil ones, teaching men Magic... They learned from them the means to sow discord between man and wife. But they could not thus harm anyone except by Allah's permission...
[Al-Qur'an, 2:102]
If anyone resorts to a diviner and believes in what he says, he has nothing to do with what has been sent down to Muhammad.

The most important sign by way of differentiating between a sorcerer (ساحر) and righteous exorciser is: A Sorcerer asks for your and your mother’s name. This is absolute proof of sorcery. No righteous exorciser will ever ask for your mother’s name. Their apparent reason for asking maternal name is that in the spiritual realm, the method of identification revolves around the mother, as opposed to the human method wherein children are recognized through fatherly lineage. Hence, women at large have been held synonymous with bad omens, exactly the kind of idea Islam's Prophet
A Sorcerer will ask for your personal traces such as; clothing, cap, handkerchief, shoes, ring, hair, nails; clear sign the person deals in sorcery. And this method was used by Lubaid b. A’sam on the Prophet
Magicians use the 'power of numbers' as they see it a potent mean to compel spirits to do their dirty work. The magician might tell you to recite something (often holy names) for a specific number of times, or do such and such in relation to some specified numerals like 3s, 7s, 9s or like thus.
Sorcerers at time ask for a specified sacrifice of animals, like say a black rooster or black dog i.e. un-common sacrifices under categorical instructions to throw it at else's doorstep, or perhaps bury it some place, and he might also use it’s blood, bones, skull for exorcism.
Sorcerer may give you stuff like threads, kalavas, inscribed incantations, rings, talisman, amulets, piece of clothing, paper to wear or dip in water (for drink or bath), to keep under cushion or for hanging, perhaps even to burn and inhale it's smoke.
Magicians ask you to do things as opposed to normal, such as walking backwards, or wear cloths inside out. Sometimes you will find amulets whereon Qur'anic ayaat are inscribed backward.
Magicians normally give you amulets and talisman that often possess engraved symbols and weird writings, strange figures and secret names (of stars), numbers with occult meaning and un-recognizable texts who's connote is un-known. These are basically names of or attempts to commune and seek aid from devils. Such amulets might contain Qur'anic verses but don’t be fooled by their mischief: for Qur’anic verses are inserted not to satisfy Allaah Ta`aala, but to deceive you and dishonor His words via other inserted symbols and numbers carrying hidden aspects of Shirk accompany the pure words of Allaah Ta`aala.
Sorcerers could give you rosaries (وظائف) for special utterance on appearance of new or full moon, ask you to take seclusion in isolated dark places, and tell you to remain dead silent during the exercise, all means to attract shayateen.
Magicians sometime can even tell your name, residence, reason of your visit, seemingly without any fore-knowledge, all with demoniac aid of course: for without their aid sorcery is not possible.
These are all obvious signs of sorcery of which we seek Allaah Ta`aala protection, so also from all it's hidden ill-effects, ameen!
Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of the Dawn; From the mischief of created things; From the mischief of Darkness as it overspreads; From the mischief of those who practise secret arts; And from the mischief of the envious one as he practises envy.

Say: I seek refuge with the Lord and Cherisher of Mankind, The King (or Ruler) of Mankind, The god (or judge) of Mankind,- From the mischief of the Whisperer (of Evil), who withdraws (after his whisper),- (The same) who whispers into the hearts of Mankind,- Among Jinns and among men.
[Al-Qur'an, 113:1-5, 114:1-6]
