Truckloads of dead civilians after Afghan battle

Villagers brought truckloads of bodies to the capital of a province in Western Afghanistan on Tuesday to prove that scores of civilians had been killed by U.S. air strikes in a battle with the Taliban.

The governor of Farah Province, Rohul Amin, said about 30 bodies had been trucked to his office, most of them women and children. Other officials said the overall civilian death toll may have been much higher, with scores of people feared killed while huddled in houses that were destroyed by U.S. warplanes.

U.S. forces confirmed that a battle had taken place with air strikes and said they were investigating reports of civilian casualties, but were unable to confirm them.

"There was an insurgent attack on an ANA (Afghan National Army) group and the ANA called for assistance, and some coalition troops joined them to help fight this group," said U.S. military spokesman Colonel Greg Julian. "There was close air support, but I can't give any detail on the type of aircraft."

He said U.S. and Afghan officials would head to the site on Wednesday to investigate the reports of civilian deaths.
"Once we get eyes on the ground we will have a better idea of what may have happened."

Ghulan Farooq, a member of parliament from the province, said he had been told by family members in the Bala Boluk district where the fighting took place that as many as 150 people had died. He said U.S. air strikes had destroyed 17 houses. Those figures could not be independently confirmed.

Lieutenant Colonel Khalil Nehmatullah, commander of an Afghan Army battalion in the province, said: "Unfortunately the Taliban took people into some buildings and forced them to stay in there after the security forces started telling them to evacuate."

"Arabs and Pakistanis were among the Taliban fighters who were armed with RPGs (rocket propelled grenades) ... the ANA entered the scene with help from a unit of U.S. marines, and they were fighting until 11 pm," he told Reuters. He said he did not know the extent of the civilian casualties.

EXECUTIONS

Amin said the battle in Farah province, a vast desert region on Afghanistan's western border, began after Taliban guerrillas moved into a village on Monday and executed three former government officials for cooperating with the state.

Before the reports of large numbers of civilian casualties emerged, the governor said four Afghan security forces members and about 25 insurgents had been killed.

The head of public health and hospitals in Farah province, Abdul Jabar Shayeq, said 11 civilians and three policemen had been admitted to hospital with wounds from the fighting.

Jalil Ahmad, a resident in the district, said earlier that some 100 Taliban fighters had taken up positions in residential areas to fight the Afghan and foreign troops.

"Civilian lives are in danger from both sides and they don't care about it," Ahmad said. "We beg President (Hamid) Karzai to save our lives."

Civilian deaths have become a bitter source of friction between Afghan authorities and U.S. forces. Washington says it is working harder this year to limit civilian deaths and investigate reports of such incidents more rapidly after the number of civilians killed by U.S. forces soared last year.

In the worst incident last year, the Afghan government and the United Nations said a U.S. strike killed 90 civilians. Washington initially denied it, but after three months said it had killed 33 civilians as well as 22 people it called militants.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai is in Washington, where he will meet U.S. President Barack Obama for the first time since Obama's inauguration. Obama has declared Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan to be Washington's main military concern.

Last year more than 7,000 people, including 2,000 civilians, died in insurgency-related violence in Afghanistan, the United Nations and aid agencies say.

The United States plans to more than double its forces to fight the Taliban insurgents this year from 32,000 at the start of the year to 68,000 by the year's end. Other countries have around 30,000 troops in Afghanistan.

Every time, someone puts up a news like this. That thread hardly gets any responses. Are we sleeping? Or just ignorant? How come no one comes out and condemns such travesty (Not us, nor our leaders).

There was news yesterday that 714 people have been killed by drones and only 14 of them were terrorists and rest of them were civilians.

Value of our life is worst than an animal's. Shame on us and shame on our leaders!

Taliban this and Taliban that. For god sake's, see the root cause of all this. If you go and kill your own people, what do you expect them to do? just stay silent and keep getting killed?

I am not saying, what Taliban are doing is right. It is absolutely wrong but our government is making them do this. There was no talibanization or anything like that before they went in and started killing their own people.

Fix the root cause and you will fix everything.

I was hoping that Nawaz Sharif will stand up for Pakistan and really represend the people. If you have followed the latest developments. America is not happy with Zardari and they are in talks with Sharif and he seems to have started talking in their tongue.

1. Innocent people being killed anywhere is condemnable.

2. I just want to ask you people one thing, Why did the Taliban take "Panga" with a superpower?
Why wasn't Osama Bin Laden handed over to America by the Taliban?
Let's be very clear about one thing, Taliban are directly responsible for the death of these innocent women and children.

3. Taliban are known to use civilians as human shield. Even in Pakistan (Swat), they are holding over 2000 civilians as human shield.

4. Why do you people have double standards? What is this "Good" Taliban and "Bad" Taliban nonsense? You say people who fight you are Bad, but those fighting America and NATO are good? Its no surprise that Pakistan has lost all credibility internationally.

5. Also, since this is a unipolar world(only one Superpower), unlike the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, this time you cannot provide safe havens to these terrorists, because your "Master" America will not allow it.

6. You cannot run with the Hare and hunt with the Hound.

Absolutely but unfortunately It hardly gets into the news. One American soldier dies and the whole country morns about it. The dog gets trapped in the tree, Its on cnn, how the poor doggy got hurt. One million civilians died in IRAQ and uncountable numbers in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Have you ever heard it in the news? Hardly!

WOW!! You made it sound so simple my friend. First go back and read the history, how all the so called jihadist were created. You do know, America started all that when they wanted them to fight soviet union. They gave them weapons, and what not. They were promised deals and when Americans turned their back on them, reaction was meant to happen. so it is not as sample as you made it be. It's not like, one day they decided, let's fight Americans

3. Taliban are known to use civilians as human shield. Even in Pakistan (Swat), they are holding over 2000 civilians as human shield.

Stop making stuff up. Talibans are heros to their own people. They are the same people who got them independence and when there was no law and order, they gave them that. Every single one of them is a fighter and they have been like that not from decades but centuries. So now Pakistani army is killing their own people (mostly civilians)and where would those people go to get justIce? they have no where to go? They fight! You can call them Taliban or whatever you like.It would be nice If you do a little research before posting anything.

5. Also, since this is a unipolar world(only one Superpower), unlike the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, this time you cannot provide safe havens to these terrorists, because your "Master" America will not allow it.

Americans indeed are the masters of most governments in the world. Yesterday's news published on an American news paper. 714 people killed so far by drones and 700 of them were civilians. They claim, there are foreigners hiding in North West Wazirstan. They haven't found even one dead body of a foreigner since they started killing( past 4-5 years?). Their whole purpose is to get into Pakistan and destroy the nuclear facility. It is all planned out. It is not me saying this. American Naval college had it all planned out and that plan was created in 1999(BEFORE 911, SURPRISE SURPRISE  ). If you google it, you can find it. First watch this video.

It looks like everything is going according to the plan?

This is the same media who's government killed 1 million iraqis and never said a thing about them. It is a propaganda, they are worried about 1 kid's life. Give me a break buddy!

I know Pathans, they will die to protect their women and kids and you are saying they have taken hostage their own people? Who the hell are they fighting for. That's who they are fighting for!!

Western Media has to protray them as inhuman and extremely evil so they can continue their killing. That is so obvious propaganda.

Do you realize soviet union was a super power and Pakistan was close to nothing in those days. Without American backing they wouldn't even think about pointing a finger

abdulhaseeb23,
1. As long as i don't use any foul language, and don't insult your country or religion, Iam allowed to write and express my views on this forum.

2. I have to say, i have learned a lot from you people about Pakistan. I used to think that the majority of people have a strong dislike towards the Taliban, but to my surprise, almost everyone on this forum supports them.

3. Also, i think you all will also benefit from the information and alternate view provided by me. For example, the sources i quoted in the earlier post were dismissed as propaganda by "lahori". I think if you ignore what the world thinks then you will be at a disadvantage.

We absolutely do not believe in their rigid version of Islam but we are against the killing of Innocents civilians. You can't just say you are a taliban and must be killed. It is like hindu and muslim conflict. Hindus think they are right and Muslims think they are right. Every community and religions have differences but killing each other is not a solution.

You only like to hear and discuss what you like. I stated several times in my post that 98% of the times civilians get killed and that creates more Taliban supporter and hatred for America, non muslims and even Pakistan. Before we attacked swat valley and wazirstan, we never heard of Talibans but since us and americans started killing civilians, the result has been obvious.

Also, i think you all will also benefit from the information and alternate view provided by me. For example, the sources i quoted in the earlier post were dismissed as propaganda by "lahori". I think if you ignore what the world thinks then you will be at a disadvantage.

Answer my one question. Do you remember recently Israel attacked Gaza strip for 10 days and killed close to 3,000 civilians. How come It was never in the news in Indian or US media? They want you to hear exactly what they want you to. WHY THE DOUBLE STANDARD?

lahori,

1. The Gaza War was widely covered by the international press.

2. What was the reason for the Gaza War?
---Hamas was firing hundreds of Qasam rockets everyday at Southern Israel.
-Now, these rockets are unguided, but they are lethal and have killed people.
-Is it wise to continuously try and cause damage to an enemy which is 100 times stronger than you? The population of Southern Israel was living in fear, what do you expect a Democratic government to do? Should it not defend its people?
-First, you fight a stronger enemy, and when your civilians suffer huge casualty, you complain that Israel is using disproportionate force.
-Don't enter into a armed fight with a stronger enemy.

3. Why don't you hold Hamas accountable? When Palestinians are suffering more deaths, shouldn't they have declared ceasefire earlier? Or do they deliberately want their people to die?

Could you imagine if this would have happened in a Western country or Israel; they would have by now bombed those responsible to annihilation by now? As long they kill Muslims: it is fine; it is for the fight against terrorism. Muslims are cheap to kill because our leaders get billion of dollars in aid and asked to keep their mouths shut and do as told.   :x

The Gaza War was widely covered by the international press.

Only Press Tv of Iran was showing exactly what was happening. Western main stream media was absolutely silent and was hardly showing the situation. Here are some of the videos to prove that.

Again, You have no clue about the history of this conflict. Until 1940s Only Arab Palestinians were living in Palestine/Israel.

In 1917 They Jews planned to get in there and occupy the land, why? because It says in their holy book that this land belongs to them and they must have to back to fulfill their religous prophecies. Also they claimed 1700 years ago their forefathers liveed there. Can you imagine, someone tellilng you this and asking for it back.
Americans told they will give them 100% backing.

So now imagine, some group of people starting coming into your country with the backing of one of the super powers and take away your land. What would you do? Just sit tight? and let them take it away.

Right now they have taken over 75% of the land and they only have Gaza strip that is world's most DENSLEY POPULATED AREA. That is an extreme oppression.

Israel has Nuclear weapons and all the latest artiliary given by the United states of America. So now you know both sides of the story

Why don't you hold Hamas accountable? When Palestinians are suffering more deaths, shouldn't they have declared ceasefire earlier? Or do they deliberately want their people to die?

Remember we fought a war against britishers who occupied our land for centuries and they are doing the samething...Or were we wrong as well?
