A man came to Imam Abu Hanfia and said:
"O Abu Hanifa, what is your opinion with regards to a man who doesn't hope for Jannah, nor does he fear Allah (SWT), nor does he fear the fire of hell, he eats dead animals, he prays without ruku and sajdah, at the same time he testifies to what he has not seen, he loves fitna and he runs away from the mercy of Allah (SWT)."
Imam Abu Hanifah posed this question to his students and some of them said this man is a kafir and these are the attributes and characteristics of a kafir. While others were unable to answer...
Imam Abu Hanifah was a very cautious man and would not give the fatwa of kufr just like that. He was of the opinion that if there are 99 sins which show that a person is a kafir and there is only one thing that shows that a person is a Muslim, the latter will be given preference.
Imam Abu Hanifah proceeded to answer the question from the top of his head and said:
"This person is a believer, a true believer and these are the characteristics of a believer."
Imam Abu Hanifah was of course asked to explain his answer as many Ulema gave the verdict of kufr on this man. He proceeded:
"When you say he doesn't hope for Jannah, one who is overpowered with the love of Allah (SWT) hopes to meet the Almighty Allah (SWT) and one who hopes to meet Almighty Allah (SWT) does not hope for Jannah.
When you say he doesn't fear Allah, it means he doesn't fear Allah that Allah (SWT) will be unjust for him in his rule on the Day of Judgement and when you say he doesn't fear hell that is because he fears Almighty Allah (SWT). One who fears Allah refrains from sin.One who refrains from sin becomes the inheritor of Jannah thus he has no need to fear the fire of hell.
When you say his animals are not slaughtered then I say he eats fish. Fish does not need to be slaughtered.
And when you say he prays without ruku or sajdah then that it is referring to Salat Al-Janazah, that he prays Salat Al-Janazah and he presents himself there and in Salat Al-Janazah there is no ruku or sajdah.
And when you say he testifies to that which he has not seen then I say that he testifies there is no God worthy of worship and Muhammad (SAW) is the Messenger of Allah (SWT) and he has not seen Allah (SWT) and he has not seen Muhammad (SAW).
And when you says he loves fitna, I say he loves his family. He loves his wife and children. Because Allah (SWT) says in the Qu'ran that "your children and your wealth are fitna".
And when you say he runs from the mercy of Allah (SWT), I say he runs from rain because rain is the mercy of Allah (SWT) and he runs from rain so he doesn't get wet."
