Asma Jahangir urges civilians to challenge army

ISLAMABAD: Pakistans civilian leaders should capitalise on public anger with the military and try to ease its grip on power, a leading human rights activist and lawyer said on Tuesday.
The armys image has been dented by a number of setbacks starting with the killing of Osama bin Laden last month by US special forces on Pakistani soil. Traditionally seen as untouchable, Pakistans generals now face strong public criticism.
Asma Jahangir, a leading human rights campaigner and head of the Supreme Court Bar Association, said the mood in the country provided an opportunity to start correcting a lopsided balance of power between the army and the civilian government.
I am hopeful that public opinion will finally embolden civil society, including politicians. But its not going to happen tomorrow morning, she told Reuters in a telephone interview.
Its going to be a perpetual struggle. They are not just going to hand over and say thank you very much we are now under civilian control. But at least they know thats what people want now.
The military has ruled nuclear-armed Pakistan for more than half of its history. Generals set security and foreign policy, even when civilian governments are in power, as is the case now.
The 600,000-strong army also runs a vast business empire that includes oil and gas interests, cereals and real estate.
Our parliament has to strengthen itself for anyone to change because nobody hands over power just voluntarily, said Jahangir.
The parliament will have to be more forceful and also begin to realise that they (the army) cant hold the economy of this country hostage, foreign policy hostage.
Pakistans civilian leaders dont seem willing to stand up to the military in a country prone to army coups. Generals often orchestrate Pakistani politics from behind the scenes.
They have selfishly overlooked the interests of the people of Pakistan. We think that its time to change, said Jahangir.
The army says it does not interfere in politics and reiterated its commitment to democracy in a statement issued this month.
Jahangir said she is hopeful of change because the military has been on the defensive. The United States kept Pakistan in the dark over the raid that killed bin Laden, humiliating the army and then piling pressure on it to crack down harder on militancy.
About 25 percent of government expenditure flows to the defence budget, according to some estimates, in a country with widespread poverty and social inequalities.
The government needs to make legislation on intelligence agencies. They need to debate the defence budget. They dont need to cut it but at least they need to debate it, said Jahangir.
There are parliamentary committees that are oversight structures for them. And there needs to be more parliamentary committees which are more effective.
To make matters worse for the military, suspicion fell on its Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) spy agency after a prominent Pakistani journalist was tortured to death and dumped in a canal. The ISI said it played no role in his death.
Then the killing of an apparently unarmed man by paramilitary forces which was caught on videotape further eroded what little public confidence remains in Pakistans security forces.
Jahangir said politicians and Pakistanis should move swiftly, but cautiously, to try and strengthen civilian institutions while the military seems vulnerable.
Momentarily they are a bit worried. They are vulnerable to the extent that people are besieging them to change. It is critical, she said.
They have a way of overcoming it too. They know that this is momentary. They will soon start getting their civilian counterparts to change public opinion to confuse the issue, to demonise people. We have seen it happen before.

Undercover agent Asma Jahangir attacks Pakistan's roots

by Pakistan media - The fifth column of the enemy on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at 6:27am

A well known undercover agent working under the disguise of "human activist" and a "Pakistani lawyer", Asma Jahangir was recently found spreading enemy's message against the Army with sheer nonsensical reasoning. She shamelessly accused the Pakistan Army and the establishment for every single upheaval that took place in the country. She said that she doesn't care if "America or Africa" attack us. She said that Pakistan Army and the ISI are the ones supporting and feeding the terrorism in the country by backing the terrorist militants (like TTP). "We beg them to go home", she shamelessly adding at this hour "accountability" of the Armed forces should be taken.

Commentary:

  • Asma Jahangir should get her dumb knowledge straight before whining against the Army before the entire media. She wants the soldiers to go to barracks, then who is engaged in a reactive war within the country at multiple fronts, encountering the TTP terrorist militants, the multiple insurgent groups like BLA, facing the NATO and the terrorist USZ soldiers at the borders of Pakistan? Is it Asma Jahangir's father, or she herself?
  • She pleads before the Armed forces to stop their "notanki", this is enough to define her origin. Enough proof whose language comes from her filthy mouth.
  • If fighting a reactive war against the "Khawarji" militants like TTP is supporting terrorism, then how would Asma Jahangir justify her "meetings" with India's top ranked terrorist organization Shiv Sena's chief Baal Thackeray?

Look where we are "with power and resepct we have given to the Army". Lets admit it if the army was not hand in glove with the cockroaches< I mean the politicians we would not be in such a mess. I am from Rawalpindi, I see these guys in every sphere of life. Drive up and down The Mall Road you will see, Artillary Mess; Signals Mess; Medical corps Mess starting Adiala Jail to Rawaplindi Polytechnic, now converted to Army College of engineering. Beautiful and expenssive Mess Halls for the officers and look else where all you see is common Pakistani Mess. You will see the difference, a marked difference. Lets admit it these guys have taken us for ride and now is time to tell them enough is enough. Lets tell to live like other armys of the world (within their means) or atleast like us common Pakistanis who has struggle day in day out.

The only thing Pakistanis want that every institution and every public office holder of this country should abide by law and constitution. And, they should put interest of Pakistan first before any thing else. I agree to the extent that only public opinion can tame the army. Nobody wants to hurt or fight army, only fools want to fight with the state. We want a strong army who is loyal to Pakistan and its interests.

I never understand this logic .... Is this army came from outer space ?? you and me and our children have equal and fair opportunity to be part of this grate institution... and all the protocol you mentioned, the mess the brigade of vehicals, the uniform is part and parcel of that institution.. do any body hold multinational companies personals from putting on expansive jackets ties and riding expansive saddens ??

As far as the things is that putting them under civilian rule you tell me putting ISI under rahman baba ?? which they even tried for few hours in 2008 ... they are under civil rule when they said in in-camera session of the parliament that you order us to put down drones and then please bare the consequences ... there was a pin drop silence in the house ...we all know that ... so who so ever is right now doing bad mouth to this institution is doing no good to this nation... who is holding peoples representatives from doing proper legislation ... not allowing army to do any businesses other then defense ... an ex army chief himself advised the national security council and we all know what NS did to him ... and then NS paid the price for that mistake in face of mush... friendly relation with INDIA my foot ... I don't know what you people are talking about...
