LAHORE: The authorities have renamed a roundabout in the eastern city of Lahore after freedom fighter Bhagat Singh to acknowledge his revolutionary spirit and his role in the movement against the erstwhile British rulers of the subcontinent.

The Shadman Chowk of Lahore will now be known as Bhagat Singh Chowk, officials said.

Bhagat Singh was hanged in March 1931 in the erstwhile Lahore Jail, which stood at the spot where the roundabout was built later. While authorities have changed the Hindu names of several places in the old quarters of Lahore over the years, the decision to rename a busy roundabout after Bhagat Singh has been hailed by some local residents as a bold move.

District administration chief Noorul Amin Mengal recently directed the City District Government of Lahore (CDGL) to make arrangements for renaming the roundabout after Bhagat Singh within a week.

He said all Pakistani citizens, including Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus and Christians, had equal rights under the Constitution and no one should object to the decision to rename the roundabout after Bhagat Singh.

Mengal ordered officials to immediately place a board indicating "Bhagat Singh Chowk" at the roundabout and to issue a public notice in the print media for seeking public comments about the move.

A good decision as we shouldn't forget people who participated in the freedom struggle without thinking if it would become a Hindu/ Muslim state.

yeah but point is not about muslim hindu name, lahore is full of intersections with hindu names but if your point is really appreciating someones struggle against brits then we muslims have enough freedom fighters, don't need their fighters to appreciate it....

Thats a great gesture my local authorities. This shows that Pakistani society is getting more mature and liberal towards own history. I think it is bold step in a way because there isn't lack of brain dead fanatics who see everything through the narrow prism of their sect/ religion. Bhagat Singh was a hero for all the people of south asia.

Being Punjabi, I am proud of our great freedom fighter Bhagat Singh,.......I am thankful to local government to acknowledge the struggle of Bhagaat Singh for the freedom of Pakistan. Another recent acknowledgement was the name of Great Urdu Afsana writer Sadat Hasan Mantoo by our federal government. So seemingly we are correcting our past folly's by now, which suggests that our emotional and toddler phase is perhaps going slowly and we are allowing ourselves to be mature enough.

Here is a road in Switzerland put after the name of Pakistani scientist And Noble laureate Dr. Abdus Salam.

Very few people know that even Quaid-e-Azam despite having nothing to do with Bhagat Singh's ideas spoke against harsh treatment faced by the latter and his fellow comrades.

"First of all Jinnah criticized the Government of Punjab for maltreatment of Bhagat Singh and his associates who went on hunger strike because they were not getting proper food like other prisoners. Jinnah boldly said in Legislative Assembly in his long speech on Sept 12 and 14 1928: “As far as Punjab Government are concerned, the government do not merely bring these men to trial and get them convicted by a Judicial tribunal but government go to war against these men. The man who goes on hunger strike has a soul. He is moved by the soul and he believes justice of his cause. He is not an ordinary criminal who is guilty of cold blooded, sordid, wicked crime.”"
