Many people wonder why Zardari worked so hard to help his decades old arch rival get the premiership? My analysis to this query is that Zardari is playing the long game here. He knows, Bilawal is still too young to be the PM and he doesn’t have numbers in Punjab to get the ultimate number for the PM seat. And he also knows that with Imran Khan in the picture, it’s very hard for PPPP to get even a reasonable number in Punjab. So he wants Bilawal to be the prime minister in 2028. To achieve this target, he has three lines of strategy working for him simultaneously. I call it the “triangle strategy.“
Line 1: Let’s move back to 2015, when Zardari said, “mn aap ki eent se eent bja doon ga, aap 3 saal k liye aatay hain aur hm ne hmesha rehna hai.” He said this to show his outrage towards the then army chief Rahil Shareef because there was an operation going on against the corruption of close friends of Zaradri. This was not taken lightly by the establishment and it angered them so much that Zardari spent his next 2 to 3 years in Dubai. During that time, Zardari introspected the whole game and came to the conclusion that it’s better to be friends with the establishment than to be the foes. So since his return to Pakistan, PPPP has been nothing but an instrument for the power corridors. In return, they have been getting favors from our miltablishment, like a soft approach towards PPPP’s mega corruption cases and in spite of their frivolous governance in Sindh, there’s not much media bashing of the Sindh government, a recent example is the fire in Dadu where many people got burnt and there was no fire brigade or ambulance to help them but it didn’t get the media thrashing, it deserved. Just imagine the media hype if the same kind of incident had happened in PTI led provinces.
Conclusion of line 1 is that PPPP is the lapdog of our miltablishment and is available to be used for mutual benefits.
Line 2: Let’s move back to PPPP’s tenure from 2008 to 2013. After the defeat in the 2008 elections, when Ch. Shuja’at Hussain accused the Americans of conspiracy, the then American deputy secretary of state Richard Armitage admitted that the US played its role through Condo Lisa Rice to bring Zardari into power.
And during his whole tenure, according to the leaked American diplomatic documents through Viki Leaks, Zardari took Americans into confidence before making any important appointments during his 5-year tenure.
Acc. to a US embassy cable, Zardari told US ambassador that “Sherry Rehman was dying for the job (of Chairman Senate), but JUI, which had 30 votes in the Senate, would never vote for a woman as Senate head."
Also remember what Obama said that he was worried after killing OBL that Pakistan would be angry that they did it without Pak’s consent but when Obama called Zardari, instead of protesting, Zardari congratulated him on the successful operation. Another such instance is Zaradri’s famous quote in regards to drone attacks, “Collateral damage worries you Americans, it does not worry us.”
That shows whatever Zardari did, he wanted to please his American masters and that’s the kind of people the US needs to fulfill its agendas in the countries like Pakistan.
The conclusion of lines 1 and 2 is that Zardari has realized the two powerful sources who are the main players in bringing or ousting the governments in Pakistan and he has decided to be in the good books of both of them.
I believe, Zardari was the main player in the ouster of Imran Khan and he achieved it by making Bilawal work for the American regime change operation so that Bilawal could be in their good books as well and the US would back him for PMship in the future. Line3: Zardari knows that it’s almost impossible for him to revive PPPP in Punjab as they have nothing extraordinary of his Sindh government to show the people of Punjab or KPK. For example, PTI had sehat card in KPK to lure the people in 2018 and people voted for them in 2022, all the provinces under PTI got universal health coverage of ten lacs yearly but it’s not available in Sindh. It’s a point to ponder that what PTI did in 3.5 years, PPPP still couldn’t do after its 13.5-year-long government in Sindh. And then there are mega corruption scandals of Zardaris, Talpurs, Memons, etc. So Zardari knows it’s very hard to get his members elected outside Sindh. That’s why he has devised a plan which is working well for him. The plan is simple, get a lot of money through corruption and then use that money to buy the elected members of other parties. How the Balochistan government fell in the last term and What happened in Sindh house this year are examples of this point.
The conclusion of line 3 is that it’s hard to get votes from millions of people but it’s easy to identify the sellouts in other parties and then buy them through lucrative offers.
Now, if you join these three lines and see the whole triangle together, you will understand Zardari’s long game to get Bilawal the PMship in 2028. He’s surrendered himself in front of the Americans and our miltablishment for personal and mutual benefits and mastered the art of identifying and buying the corrupt souls to get to his final destination, the Prime Minister-ship for Bilawal.
