Sunni or Shia is a matter of understanding or school of thought. Under the Prophet (PBUH), the companions saw his lifestyle and followed but the people coming later , saw only the Sahaba.. and followed them.
About a hundred years later, and as things progress to a point where there was no direction mention of any subject in the Quran, the scholars had to resort to "IJTEHAAD" ,
And even in this there are difference of opinion, hence the 4 imams different interpretation of Hadith.
Although there was no Sunni people earlier but when one group parted ways and called themselves Shian Ali, so the rest called themselves Sunni (followers of Sunna of Prophet).

You can deny that Sunni and Shia don't exist and believe IN your own interpretation of Quran and Hadith, ... you will be answerable for your own deeds.

ok, so when you confront a Shia, how do you define yourself... if you say, muslim, he will say i am also muslim, if you say i follow quran, he will say i also follow quran...
Then only to differ from him you will say i am not Shia, i am sunni.
As a Sunni, i am not innovating new religion or practicing any new rituals, the same Quran and Hadith... unless you tell me you dont believe in Hadith, then you and Shaikh Mohammad of Karachi and other Pervezi groups... you are on your own, no argument with you, gone astray.

This has everything to do with Hadith. we have one Quran and we don't disgree with that. At the same time , the Sunna or the Hadith of the prophet (PBUH) are also of the same importance.
