151 NADRA officials dismissed for fake ID cards, policy violations
ISLAMABAD: 151 officials from the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) were dismissed for making fake ID cards and policy violations.
According to official documents, over 500 NADRA officials are facing inquiries. The aforementioned 151 officials were dismissed over the past five years.
In regards to the policy violations, some officials were accused of stealing citizens’ confidential data. Others were accused of processing Pakistani identification cards for foreigners.
NADRA authorities stated that action has been taken against 79 employees who made ID cards for Iranian citizens. Over two dozen of these employees were dismissed.
In the past five years, more than 8,500 employees have been hired, according to NADRA authorities.
Fake identity cards have been a recurring issue in Pakistan. In August of 2021, NADRA Chairman Tarik Malik stated that there had been 87 cases of NADRA officials issuing fake identity cards.
47 of those officials were dismissed for creating fake identity cards. The computerised National Identity Cards (CNIC) of 45 individuals were also unblocked. Senator Talha Mahmood stated that this was done in exchange for a house.
Chairman Malik also ordered inquiries into NADRA officials in December of 2022 and March of 2023. A probe found that up to 10 employees illegally accessed the data of Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir’s family. The Subsequent inquiry committees found six officials responsible.
In February of this year, a statement posted on NADRA’s website stated that a joint internal investigation with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) concluded that five individuals were involved in the illegal processing of national ID cards to non-nationals. In March it was reported that the joint investigation resulted in eight officers being suspended and charged, three of which were part of senior management.
The joint investigation team (JIT) also confirmed that the personal information of over 2.7 million Pakistanis was stolen from NADRA’s database between 2019 and 2024.
