Hundreds of Lady Health Workers (LHWs) from across Punjab Monday staged a sit-in on the main thoroughfare of the provincial metropolis, The Mall, against the lacklustre attitude of the Punjab government to implement their agreed upon demand of regularization.


The sit-in added insult to the injury of majority of commuters who witnessed such scenes on daily basis because of on-going construction works on different roads in the City.

Lady Health workers from all parts of the province started reaching the City early morning and gathered at Jinnah Park before staging their protest demo and sit-in at The Mall at around 11: 20 am.

A police official deployed at The Mall told The News that lady health workers reached the road rallying from Jinnah Park. “As they reached Faisal Chowk the Road was shut down for all kinds of traffic at 11:30 am,” he added.

Carrying placards and banners the protesting ladies chanted slogans against the Punjab government and criticised it for not regularizing their services despite the orders of the Supreme Court. “The chief justice ordered to grant us permanent status last year but the Punjab government has still not done anything in this regard and has deprived us of our salaries,” the participants maintained.

Some ladies were also seen having their minor children with them.

Talking to The News, Lady Health Workers Employees Association Punjab president Rukhsana Anwar said that they were forced to take this course as the Punjab government was not heeding to their single demand of regularization. She claimed that the Supreme Court had ordered the provincial government to regularize all LHWs in 2013 but the government failed in implementing the order even after the lapse of one year.

According to her, there were around 50, 000 LHWs in the province deprived of this (regular) status.

“I have served the department for twenty years on contract and without any scale,” said Rukhsana, adding that, after serving for so many years, she was still getting very less amount of salary (around Rs 8,000) per month. She said the maximum salary of LHWs was far less than the minimum salary of labourers (Rs 10, 000) per month.

According to Rukhsana, Khwaja Imran Nazir, an MPA of the ruling party, PML-N, had visited their sit-in venue and assured them that the Punjab government would table a bill in the Punjab Assembly regarding their demand on March 5, 2013.

“We have no other demand,” the provincial president of LHWs said, adding that, until the government considered their demand, they would not leave the place.

Another lady, Jameela, from Gujranwala said that she got the job in 2005 against Rs 3, 000 per month and slowly reached Rs 4, 000 per month. She claimed that they had not been paid a single penny out of their ‘meagre’ salary for the last many months.

Due to blockage of The Mall from Charring Cross to Faisal Chowk, commuters observe worst kind of traffic jam for the whole day. Some commuters were even observed shouting at traffic wardens who remained busy throughout the day in diverting traffic on adjacent roads of The Mall.

“Although the courts have placed a ban on staging protests and blocking The Mall, the road still serves as an attractive place to press for justice for many,” said agitated Ali Usman, a shop owner at Mall Road. He complained that business activities suffered a lot during such activities.

Meanwhile, PTI Punjab president Ejaz Ch said that the government was creating extreme injustice by depriving these lady health workers of their due salary and continuously ignoring their demands. He said that the health sector of Punjab was under continuous deterioration as the government had failed to satisfy the health professional.

He said that the PTI was demanding the government immediately pay attention to the health sector issue and the PTI would take up the issues both in the provincial and local assembly.

Dr. Yasmin Rashid, General Secretary Punjab, said that the government seemed to be on a mission to destroy health facilities in Punjab as it had also tried to demolish Lady Willingdon Hospital.

She said that PTI had taken a stay on the demolition but the government had said again that the hospital would not be affected and only a part of it would be pulled down. She said that the government would destroy its quarters and make the poor workers of Lady Willingdon to come out on the streets.
