Islam is not a MAZHAB!!! It's a complete code of life.
Dear murfi, it is true that islam is not a mazhab but a divine constitution. What does that mean? It means islam gives us goals and guidelines for laws within which we are free as a community to set our own goals and make our own laws that do not clash with these set values and principles.
This is why imperialist mullaism is different from islam because that is rule and law that was passed down our generations as islamic law in form of books of fiqh. These are laws mostly made by mullahs to serve their kings not islam. Today those rules and laws are used by ruling elite to do the same thing to masses in the name of islam.
The quran leaves open for muslims to make laws that suit their time but must remain within limits set by the quran. Instead we are being forced to live by laws that were made many cunturies back in time. The problem is that if we follow those laws we will be committing suicide. It is like putting a grown up man back into baby dress.
World does not stand still it changes with time therefore only permanent goals and guidelines or rules and laws can be followed because they take into account changing situations and circumstances therefore applications can be decided.
Overall goal of islam is establishing divine rule of law in the divine kingdom. However, subordinate goals are establishing freedom, justice, fairness, compassion, brotherhood, progress and prosperity for mankind. Likewise for establishing these goals we have been given laws eg murder is not allowed and if anyone murders somebody his life could be taken in return.
So we can have any goal as individuals or as a society that is within the limits set by divine goals. Likewise we can have any laws to fulfil our goals and again within limits set by divine laws.
If we look into hadith books and fiqh books a lot of stuff contradicts these clearly set out divine goals and guidelines therefore we know beyond a shadow of doubt that some one has been tempering with islam or has been playing silly games with it. Since we have history books which can be dated therefore we come to know who these people were and what motivated them to do that.
It is like investigating a murder case. Nothing at all difficult to find out. The only problem is reconstruction of islam because it is very hard work to find out what was the original shape of islam ie how the prophet might have taught islam originally before mullahs did their work on it.
This is where people like sir seyyed come into the picture because he managed to reignite the debate as to what original islam was without all this legend, mystery and superstition. Iqbal realised the importance of his work and came out with idea of deconstruction of imperialist islam and reconstruction of proper islam. He convinced jinnah along his thoughts and parwez tried to actually explain the difficulties in the reconstruction. They all did a great job in drawing our attention to our real problem even though none of them succeeded in actual reconstruction of islam by total reinterpretation of the quran. Had they done that things would have been much better in the muslim world but may be people will come forward and complete this task according to their laid out foundation. Only if we succeeded in completing their work we will have islam established otherwise whatever we establish in the name of islam is not going to be islam but something anti islam.
regards and all the best
