The recent killing of a senior member of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Zahra Shahid, is despicable and warrants utmost condemnation from all parties. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has crossed all boundaries of decency. It is high time the British government took stern action against Altaf Hussain who is directing violent political activities from the safe sanctuary of Britain.
If the British government does not act now, it will alienate most Pakistanis and Muslim well-wishers all over the globe. How can Altaf Hussain conduct such political activities on British territory? Would Britain have allowed one of its citizens to do what Altaf Hussain does outside of its borders? Britain should revoke his naturalized citizenship and deport him to Islamabad immediately to face many charges pending against him.
Time and again, MQM senior leaders have threatened secession of Karachi and Hyderabad from Pakistan, and these utterances are enough to charge them with treason and other constitutional violations. Altaf Hussain and his puppets in Karachi have created mayhem through the target killing of many innocent people.
If unchecked, MQM will continue to stifle economic and social progress of Karachi which will affect the whole of Pakistan. Both Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) and PTI have pledged to turn over a new leaf and imbibe a new value system based on good governance and all-party reconciliation. Chances are MQM will not allow this to succeed because it has been hijacked by people who no longer believe in a peaceful Pakistan. The MQM routinely picks up fights with the Sindhis, Baluchis and Punjabis. Their behavior has turned many Pakistanis against this Urdu-speaking group who won’t accept electoral defeat easily. They have neither political conviction nor any ideology which would augur well for Pakistan.
Altaf Hussain must be expelled from Britain to stand trial for the many allegations he faces in Pakistan. It is important that the West, especially Britain and the US, extend their maximum assistance to the new government in Pakistan to help them fight religious and ideological extremists and fanatics. An unstable Pakistan will harm Western interests in the whole of South Asia so Britain cannot afford to let the country down. It is time Britain stopped giving sanctuary or political asylum to mischief-makers
