Survey: 55% of Israelis say they're inclined to vote for peace deal

Thirty-nine percent of respondents said they would support any plan Netanyahu presented, while another 16 percent said they would probably approve such a plan. Twenty percent were sure they would vote against.

The survey of 511 respondents was carried out by the Dialog Institute under the supervision of Prof. Camil Fuchs of Tel Aviv University, with a 4.3% margin of error.

More than half of all Israelis would likely support any peace agreement Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu submitted to a referendum, a poll carried out Wednesday found.

The poll was conducted four days after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's announcement last Friday that negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians would resume. Following that announcement, Netanyahu, under pressure from his right-wing coalition partners, pledged that he would bring any peace deal to a referendum.

In the survey, 39 percent of respondents said they would support any plan Netanyahu presented, while another 16 percent said they would probably approve such a plan. Five percent said they thought they would vote against it, 20 percent were sure they would vote against it, and 20 percent were undecided.

The survey of 511 respondents was carried out by the Dialog Institute under the supervision of Prof. Camil Fuchs of Tel Aviv University.

Meanwhile, at a meeting Tuesday of the Knesset caucus for the Land of Israel, chairman Yariv Levin (Likud) said he had no objection to negotiations, but they had to be without preconditions. Moreover, "we want to come out of the talks with the settlements preserved, because that's the only way to ensure Israel's security and bring peace and stability."

In response to reports that Netanyahu has agreed to the release 82 Palestinian prisoners who have been in Israeli jails since before the Oslo Accords were signed in 1993, Levin said he was "unequivocally opposed" to the move. "It does not matter to me how many years they have been in prison. A murderer has to pay the full price, as punishment and as deterrence."

Levin said he also opposes freezing settlement construction as a gesture, and that construction should begin immediately, "to show them we mean it."

"We were told Tuesday that despite the enormous pressure, the prime minister stood strong and did not agree to restrictions," he added.

At the meeting of the Likud's Knesset faction, Levin reiterated this stance, urging Netanyahu to "release tenders [for construction], not murderers."

Deputy Foreign Minister Zeev Elkin also took Netanyahu to task at the caucus meeting over the reports of a prisoner release and a building freeze in the settlements. "The state of Israel will not give up its right to build in Judea and Samaria. It is crooked logic to say that the release of terrorists contributes to peace and the construction of a kindergarten hurts peace," he said.

MK Orit Strock (Habayit Hayehudi) added, "We demand to see proof that there are no preconditions, whether a prisoner release or a building freeze in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria."

I really hope the Israeli far-right decides to stop being paranoid idiots and allow the growing voices of peace in Israeli society to do the right thing with the Palestinians.

Otherwise, siasat.pk members will keep using emotional facebook posts to justify their hatred for Jews (and act offended when the world does the same with Muslims).

I don't think BiBi wants peace...(serious)....even if a peace deal is reached, there is too much hate accumulated over the past decade for it to be effective...

Firstly
the poll you posted is not really in line with dozens of others which shows Israel and Israelis are not interested in peace. In respecting 1967 borders or the two state solution.
The occupation hardly effects their lives. Support from US, EU (the usual) is always forthcoming.
Politically no major party in Israeli politics is interested in stopping settlements, any sort of concession whatsoever with Palestinian.

Also the poll is worded in an interesting way. What exactly is Netanyahu Peace plan? No concrete proposal exist. From his history its known 1) He want settlement activities to accelerate.
2) He wont lift siege of gaza 3)He prefers the further bantusization of Palestinians in west bank 4) He wants to gradually ethnically cleanse Palestinians from E Jerusalem and considers it the capital of a Jewish state.

The poll is like asking Indians if they agree with Modis Peace plan for Kashmir.

UPDATE: I was right

A Haaretz-Dialog Institute poll conducted on Tuesday, under the supervision of Prof, Camile Fuchs, from the Department of Statistics at Tel Aviv University, finds the nation deeply skeptical. [HI]About 70 percent of respondents say they do not believe a peace agreement will be achieved, and some 60 percent do not believe that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu truly intends to divide the land into two states, ours and theirs[/HI]. But a majority ‏(55 percent‏) say they will vote for any agreement the prime minister makes with the Palestinians, compared with 25 percent who would vote against.

Secondly their hasnt been a single pro Palestinian post on siasat.pk in past 4 moths.

Even when recently Israelis decided to blow up Gaza again out cry and solidarity in Pakistan was minimal.

Most Pakistanis are out for them selves and couldn't give a Rats ***. Infact in the English speaking variety during Mush era the Idea of restoring full ties with Israeli was unusually popular.

Thirdly its very odd that you are only interested in Palestinian suffering as it theoretically enables alleged anti semitism (Criticism of Israel, even intense does not amount to the same thing) on obscure Pakistani forums.

Fourthly given their are no jews in Pakistan. Anti Semitism isnt really a pressing issue. I wish you had the same concern for a people who are as you speak being forcibly dispossessed of the remaining tiny morsels of the land.
And being kept in virtual siege like condition, while being tarred and feathered daily as "terrorist" fundamentalists and what have you.
