Nawaz was responsible for 1992 operation: Haider

Tuesday June 21, 2011 (1127 PST)

KARACHI: The MQM’s deputy parliamentary leader in the National Assembly, Haider Abbas Rizvi criticised PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif on Monday for his harangue in Azad Kashmir against his party.

He said that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was fully responsible for the state operation against the MQM in 1992 in which thousands of workers were killed. In a statement issued here on Monday, he said PML-N leader Sharif always discussed the May 12, 2007, carnage but he forgot to mention June 19, 1992 state operation against the MQM.
News desk adds: “Entirepopulations were encircled and innocent people were subjected to untold humiliation and cruelty. It was during his tenure that mutilated bodies of MQM workers were found in the streets of Karachi,” the MQM leader added.
He said Nawaz Sharif always spoke about unconstitutional steps taken by others, but he shamefacedly forgot that he suspended the elected Sindh Assembly and installed his handpicked puppet as Musheer-e-Aala in total violation of the constitution. “It was Nawaz Sharif who imposed governor’s rule in Sindh to satisfy his lust for power,” he added.

PML-N hints at legal action against MQM members for "bad-mouthing" its leadership

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz is contemplating legal action against the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) parliamentarians, who were involved in "bad-mouthing and using unparliamentary language" against the PML-N leadership.
On Wednesday, leaders of both parties indulged in a mud-slinging bout, and did not even refrain from using abusive language and profanities against each other, besides hurling threats of serious consequences.
MQM's Haider Abbas Rizvi had referred to PML-N leader Chaudhry Nisar as "Mr Bean", and said the PML-N leaders would not find a place to stand in the country if "Pandora's box was opened".
Rizvi claimed the PML-N leaders used to meet with generals in the dark of night, adding that the PML-N chief was General Jilani's production, General Zia's follower and grateful to General Pervez Musharraf.
MQM's Waseem Akhtar remarked that Nisar was bald and had put on a wig, while PML-N leaders- Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif- both got hair transplants during their forced stay in England, and it seemed they wanted to have "some romantic affairs".
He further said the PML-N leadership had done nothing for the people of Lahore, and that the people would beat them with shoes.
The MQM leaders also accused the Sharifs of having "weird likes", as at a women's convention, Nawaz had compared himself to Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and his wife to Mumtaz Mahal.
PML-N Information Secretary Ahsan Iqbal was critical of the political parties, which in spite of being part of the coalition government, were criticising it day in and day out.
"If they are really sincere, they should leave the government and do politics based on principles," the Dawn quoted Iqbal, as saying at a press conference on Saturday.
He blamed the government and its coalition partners for the worsening law and order situation, and also slammed the government for a massive increase in petroleum prices, calling for a reversal of the decision.
Iqbal also called for removal of 'corrupt' officials from financial institutions, saying that new appointments should be made through a parliamentary committee, and that Pakistan's economy was on its knees because of corruption.
Had President Asif Zardari acted upon the advice of PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif, the country would not have been in dire straits, said Iqbal.
He reiterated his party's stance that it would not be a part of the "puppet show for a mere change of face".
"My party thinks that any change should be meaningful and decisive," the PML-N leader added. (ANI)

Merit what? Public hospitals to get `dose` of PML-N workers

By Asif Chaudhry |

LAHORE, June 28: In what appears a blatant disregard of merit, the Chief Minister’s Secretariat on Tuesday handed down the ‘final lists’ of ‘candidates’, who happen to be PML-N workers, to the heads of at least three public health institutions of Lahore for their appointment against 215 permanent lower-cadre posts advertised in news papers, it is learnt.

None of the PML-N workers named in the list has gone through the recruitment process as was followed by the ‘ordinary’ applicants the last month, a source in the CM’s Secretariat told Dawn.

“It will be a classic example of bypassing the official procedures if the health institutions – Children Hospital, Lady Wallington Hospital and Jinnah Hospital – recruit these candidates on the recommendation of the secretariat,” says a senior government official.

“You are directed to consider these candidates finalised for the posts advertised in local newspapers. Prepare their appointment orders and submit to the Chief Minister’s Secretariat within two days,” were the instructions issued to the heads of three institutions in a meeting held at 7-Club Road on Tuesday, an official said requesting anonymity.

The lists of party-backed candidates were handed over to Children’s Hospital Medical Director Prof Dr Ehsan Waheed Rathore, Lady Wallington Hospital MS Dr Muhammad Afzal and Jinnah Hospital MS Dr Afzal Shaheen.
The meeting was presided over by secretary to chief minister Tauqeer Shah while an advisor to CM, Mansha Ullah Butt, was also present.
The lists were finalised for 70 posts of Children Hospital, 112 of Lady Wallington Hospital and 33 posts of Jinnah Hospital.
The advertised jobs included posts of stenographers, laundry managers, ward boys, operation theatre attendants, security
guards, sterilizer operators, cooks, sanitary workers, ward attendants, gatekeepers, senior biomedical technicians, etc.
The source said that many of the candidates included in these lists had no relevant experience or qualification considered essential for handling technical posts. Such recruitments might create legal complications not only for the employees but also for those involved in recruitment process, he added.
The source said the Mayo Hospital had advertised 142 posts in April against which some 36,000 candidates filed applications.
The interviews of the short-listed applicants were conducted in May.

The source said the Mayo Hospital administration stopped the process of issuing appointment letters to the qualified candidates on the interference of the Punjab government as serious differences had developed between two senior PML-N leaders, each wanting to get his own workers appointed against the posts. Resultantly, no recruitment could be made at the Mayo Hospital so far, he added.

He said that to avoid such ‘complications’ in future, the provincial government called the medical superintendents of all the public hospitals at an emergent meeting in the end of May at 8-Club Road, exclusively to sort out the issue of political recruitments. Tauqeer Shah and additional secretary Abdul Qayum were also present.

In the meeting, the source said, the public hospitals’ heads were clearly told the recruitments would be made only on the Punjab government’s recommendation.

Most of the public sector heath facilities, including Mayo Hospital, Lahore General Hospital, Children Hospital, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Jinnah Hospital etc had advertised vacant posts and the recruitment process was going on there for the last one month or so.

When contacted, CM’s advisor Mansha Uallah strongly dispelled the ‘impression’ that political recruitments were being made at the public hospitals. He claimed all recruitments were being made on merit. He also denied that lists of PML-N workers were given to the medical superintends of the hospitals for their hiring against vacant posts.

PML-N treads carefully but ready to welcome MQM

6-29-2011_17763_l.jpg

Ansar Abbasi
ISLAMABAD: After bungling to the complete advantage of the PPP, the PML-N is now prepared to welcome the MQM in the opposition’s fold.

Presently the PML-N is keenly watching the seriousness of the MQM to finally leave the corrupt PPP regime. Unlike the past, the N-leaguers are now prepared to hug the MQM as soon as the divorce between the PPP and MQM matures.

Otherwise dejected with the AJK poll result, the MQM’s decision to quit the coalition both at the centre and in Sindh, besides leaving the governorship, has thrilled the N-Leaguers, who have failed terribly during the last two years as an effective opposition party. Instead the PML-N has been providing great protection to a regime that even the N’s own leaders proclaim to be the most corrupt and the biggest threat to democracy. But through their dumb policies they have consolidated and strengthened the Zardari regime over the years.

Last time when the MQM had left the federal government and decided to leave the treasury benches and join the opposition in the National Assembly, the PML-N instead of welcoming Muttahida launched a scathing attack on the party. It was the PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif, who in a public gathering in Muzzaffarabad attacked the MQM. Such an unexpected attack forced the MQM to rush back in the government’s fold.

On that very occasion, the MQM’s blow would have really been fatal for the Gilani regime as minus the MQM the premier had lost the majority but the N-tirade against MQM saved the government from an otherwise certain fall.

This time the PML-N leaders are cautious in their response, all making sure that no negative utterance is made against the MQM. There is now realisation within the party that despite being the leading opposition party, the N league is isolated instead of providing the required impetus to all opposition voices for a joint strategy against the government. In the recent AJK elections, the PML-N has supported the Jamaat-e-Islami candidates, the move that has brought a little positivity between the two parties.

It is though generally considered that the MQM’s exit from the ruling coalition would not immediately hurt the government but if the PML-N steers the opposition parties with a joint strategy against the PPP regime things would become serious for the Gilani regime.

Outside the parliament, the Imran Khan-led Tehrik-e-Insaaf has already launched a movement for mid-term polls under an independent election commission. However, political analysts believe that isolated moves by the opposition parties would not hurt the government in any manner.
