Altafs serious charges against PPP

MQM chief Altaf Hussein has said that the present PPP Government was conspiring, in collusion with United States, against ISI, armed forces and other institutions .Though Mr. Altaf Hussein did not provide any specific evidence to support the allegations , the statement, cannot be taken as mere rhetoric .Its very important that someone from the treasury benches respond to it with responsibility.

Pakistans armed forces particularly ISI is under enormous pressure these days. On the one hand the US military aid has been put on hold to force Pakistani troops to take action in North Waziristan and number of drone attacks in tribal areas is increasing on the other. The story does not end here. Strong statements accusing Pakistani security personnel of having ties with Talaban and A lQaeda operatives have also become a daily routine.

Under these circumstances Altaf Husseins statement cant be simply ignored. Government should clarify its position and at the same time Altaf Hussein must be asked on what grounds he came out with this statement.

My memory is not very good but I am certain that MQMs recent differences with PPP started on the issue of two seats of AJK Assembly from Karachi. MQM leaders had accused that federal Interior minister Mr. Rehman Malik pressurized them to withdraw their candidates in favor of PPP from one of the Karachi constituencies. There was no mention of any PPP-USA sponsord plot against ISI or armed forces at that time. The problem which seemed minor in the beginning soon turned into a political tsunami which washed away the fragile PPP-MQM alliance. And now begins a seemingly endless blame game, involving conspiracy against the ISI and armed forces in collusion with United States.

Most of the Pakistanis believe that there are now three visible forces--PPP, MQM and ANP in Karachi. All of them have armed brigades to do what their masters want in Karachi. The state has become so week that neither it could disarm these brigades nor protect the life and property of an ordinary citizen. Consequently dozens of innocent people are being butchered daily on the streets of Karachi.

These forces need to understand that they cannot defeat or eliminate each other. There is only one way forward which is to evolve a formula for coexistence. Accusing each other of damaging the national Institutions just to gain political milage is like playing with fire which could be counter-productive.

Mr. Altaf Hussein must give the proof if he has any to prove his accusations and the PPP must also clarify its position on the issue
