We tend to believe that we are unique. And that democracy could never work for us. We lack the will and capability to do a simple analysis of why can't we make even basic democracy work in our country. Some form of democracy, with all its faults, is not only working in the developed countries rather in the third world countries too.
We don't seem to realize that we are not a special breed and that we should give up trying to mould democracy to match our failings. Instead we should come to a realization, rather quickly, that what we really need to do is to overcome the faults in ourselves and adopt simple democratic system and let it run its course. We should stop trying to blame democracy for our own failings and justifying military dictatorships. I think that nothing could be worse than this defeatist attitude that we are not good enough for democracy and pray and wish for a benevolent dictator to ride in on a high horse to save us. We have not learned any lessons in the 34 years under dictatorships and the years spent cleaning up the mess left over by these lesser men masquerading as our saviors.
