General elections in the country are not possible before May 2024. Kanwar Dilshad, former secretary of the Election Commission of Pakistan, says that the elections will be possible only after nine months.
The new delimitation based on the 2023 census will be completed in four months and then the electoral rolls will have to be revised on the basis of this census.
He said that there will also be objections to the revised electoral rolls and then it will take three months to complete the process of printing the voter lists, after two months, 54 days will be needed to release the election schedule, so it is not possible to hold the next general elections before nine months or May 2024.
Dilshad said that he is not only saying this on the basis of his experience, but those who are ignoring the revision of electoral rolls will also have to go through the Election Act 2017.
He further said that preparation of fresh electoral rolls after delimitation is a mandatory process which cannot be ignored; the Election Commission has recently said that the results of the seventh census in 2023 have been published regularly, so the Election Commission is bound to make new constituencies.
