You have a point about red baiting but most Americans aren't really running around scared of communism...its a different century and propaganda is hard when the things he is offering already exist in many Western countries..
Hillary is a bought candidate and it seems the driving factor is economy..and a very small portion of the country thinks that she will represent their economic interests...Trump will bash her over that like Bernie never has as he is not taking big money either..she is more vulnerable than he is..

Also I would argue that the republicans have been calling Obama a socialist and communist so much that apart from their republican base, the label has lost its sting to the majority of the public...

Post-Trump American polity is a different story. Trump has just taken America back to medieval ages. If you don't believe, just read his comments about 'punishment' for abortion , LGBT rights, God matters to be in public, expanding the military, reviving American exceptionalism and the list goes on. (omg) And despite all this insane rhetoric , the crowd he pulls in reminds me of Modi. Many critics used to say the same that he may be a crowd magnet but he will not get votes and we saw that he made his way easily.
