ISLAMABAD: The city administration on Thursday averted a possible clash between protesting citizens and the Lal Masjid cleric and madrassa students of the mosque.

The civil society activists and common citizens had assembled right in front of Lal Masjid’s main entrance gate to hold a candlelight vigil in memory of the students and teachers who lost their lives in the Peshawar massacre.

On their part, the Islamabad Police not only restrained the organisers of the vigil from using the megaphones they were carrying, but also accepted on-the-spot an application filed by Abdur Rehman Muavia, Islamabad general secretary of Ahle Sunnat wal Jamaat (ASWJ), for ‘appropriate action’ against those gathered.

The application states, “Some representatives of ‘so-called’ civil society gathered in front of Lal Masjid and wrongly alleged that Lal Masjid chief cleric Abdul Aziz was responsible for the Peshawar mayhem…and their act hurt public sentiments.”

The application was received by the Islamabad Police City SP. However, he later informed The Express Tribune that the application was only accepted to “defuse the tension” on the scene.

Soon after the vigil began, the crowd began chanting slogans condemning Abdul Aziz for a recent appearance on a TV channel where he flatly refused to condemn the Peshawar attack and his open admission of mosque’s ‘ideological allegiance’ with terrorist groups including Al-Qaeda and Islamic State.
The protesters demanded that the police arrest Aziz by reopening old cases against him.

Baton-wielding police personnel were present at the gathering, while a handful of Lal Masjid students gathered outside the mosque, having a stare down with the protesters.

Later, when the sloganeering seemed to have degenerated into a shouting match between the protesters and madrassa students led by Muavia, the police called in reinforcements.
A police armoured personnel carrier and Rangers officials soon reached the site.
Magistrate Kamran Cheema and senior police officials then began efforts to persuade the organisers to call off their vigil.
SSP Asmatullah Junejo also addressed the gathering in a bid to peacefully clear the area, however, he cut short his speech after being drowned out by heckling and booing.

Instead of lecturing us, arrest the terrorist sitting inside the mosque,” came shouts from the crowd. “Protect the general public and their children instead of protecting extremist,” yelled a group at the other end of the crowd.

While some were more democratic, shouting, “Protest is our constitutional right”, others bluntly referred to the Lal Masjid operation, saying “Abdul Aziz is a murderer, arrest him”.

Later, Junejo called the Islamabad deputy commissioner to inform him that the police might have to use force to disperse the gathering as people had started gathering at the mosque to offer Isha prayers.

They later dispersed peacefully while announcing that they will gather again at the same venue at 5pm on Friday. They later also said that they would protest every day till Aziz was put behind bars.
Earlier, the gathering observed two-minutes of silence for victims of the massacre.

They also wrote the names of the victims on a whiteboard. Some participants paid homage to the victims in short speeches.

Jabbar Khan, a civil society activist, said Aziz hurt countrymen by not condemning the incident. “Why is he openly propagating hate? He should be put behind bars,” Khan said.

Naeem Mirza said the Lal Masjid cleric openly supports groups such as the TTP, which claimed responsibility for the attack on the school.

Islamabad - The clerics and students of Lal Masjid were confronted with an improbable sight Thursday evening.

A large number of protesters, mostly young men and women, dressed in jeans, long coats and hoodies, stood outside and raised slogans against Maulana Abdul Aziz, the head cleric of the mosque, who in a recent television interview, refused to condemn the terror attack on the school in Peshawar.

Maulana Aziz is no strange to controversies and has often hogged headlines due to his statements that have caused revulsion in some sections of the society. But never before did he cause so much outrage that it forced the residents of the capital to stage a protest against him.

They shouted slogans against Maulana Aziz and lit up candles in memory of the school children, who were brutally murdered by the Taliban militants.
“Today we have reclaimed G-6 sector from the clutches of Red Mosque. This protest indicates that liberal forces too have the right to disagree with the ideology of Maulana Abdul Aziz,” said Kapil Dev, one of the protesters. “Let them (religious students) shoot me dead. Being a Hindu, I will continue my voice for the innocent students of Peshawar.”

Abdul Aziz is still a sympathiser of Taliban,”Jibran Nasir, who had contested election in NA-250 Karachi as independent candidate against PTI leader Arif Alvi, said while addressing the charged crowd.

The protesters shouted in support and condemned the cleric. Soon, the students of the seminary emerged and both groups started exchanging hot words.

A heavy contingent of police and elite force reached the venue, followed by Rangers troops.
“We will not leave the venue until we register our protest. We will not let Islamabad taken hostage by students of orthodox religious seminaries,” Jibran said, undeterred.

“Lal Masjid should openly condemn Taliban otherwise the government should take action against it,” he demanded.
Temperature flared when protesters chanted slogans like ‘Down with Abdul Aziz’, ‘Hang him’, triggering Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Islamabad Asmatullah Junejo to personally request the participants to disperse as soon as possible.
But the angry activists refused to budge, arguing that if religious groups had the right to protest outside Lal Masjid then others should also be allowed to protest.

The protesters said they will remain outside the mosque until a resolution is passed that included reopening of cases against Maulana Abdul Aziz besides asking private televisions to stop interviews of radical Islamists as it was spreading religious intolerance and extremism in the society.

The protesters further said that they wanted to offer prayers inside Lal Masjid for the families of the victims but police and the mosque’s administration did not allow, fearing it could escalate into a clash with the religious students inside the mosque.
The protesters then exhorted Maulana Aziz to come out - even in burqa, some protesters shouted -and publicly condemn the Peshawar attack.
In response, there was no sign of the Maulana but his students, some of who were wielding sticks, threatened to come out of the mosque premises.

SSP Junejo ordered his men, who were in riot gear, to form two rows so that the competing groups would not get a chance to come closer.
Rights activists finished their speeches and started dispersing peacefully but vowed to return today (Friday).

Feeling the pressure, a statement was later issued from Shuhada Foundation of Lal Masjid that condemned the Peshawar attack as an attack on humanity and demanded a judicial inquiry.
However, not surprisingly, the group left a caveat. “The mastermind of the attack was either India or Israel as the weapons used in the terrorist incident were India-made,” the statement read.

Islamabadites are used to witnessing the followers of Maulana protest often and even take law into their hands. In 2007, the students of Lal Masjid went on a vigilante rampage in Islamabad, forcing females not to drive on the roads and kidnapping some after accusing them of moral turpitude. The females students of the adjacent Jamia Hafsa, wielding sticks and covered head to toe in black burqas, would also come out on the streets and demand to enforce their own version of religion in the country.
Thursday evening was unprecedented as a small but expressive group of protesters turned the tables on the Maulana.
The protest was organised by Jibran Nasir, a rights activist who hails from Karachi. The protesters started gathering outside Lal Masjid at 6 p.m. They shouted slogans against Maulana Aziz and lit up candles in memory of the school children, who were brutally murdered by the Taliban militants.

A handful of Lal Masjid students also gathered outside the mosque and kept staring at the participants.

The police then not only stopped the organisers of the vigil from using a loudspeaker, which they were carrying, but it also accepted an on the spot application filed by the general secretary of Islamabad chapter of Ahle Sunnat wal Jamaat (ASWJ) Abdur Rehman Mauvia seeking appropriate action against those gathered.
The charges mentioned in the application include, Some representatives of so-called civil society gathered in front of Lal Masjid and wrongly alleged Lal Masjids chief Maulana Abdul Aziz for Peshawar mayhem and that their act hurt public sentiments.
The application was received by SP (City) Islamabad Police, who later told The Express Tribune that it was just to defuse the tension.
At one point when slogans of vigil participants became quite loud, which prompted mosque students led by Mauvia started shouting. This prompted the police request for additional units to control the crowd.
Within no time police armored vehicle, reserved force and personal of Rangers also reached the spot.
SSP Operations Asmatullah Junaejo then addressed the vigil participants and asked them to leave the venue. However, his speech was cut short by heckling and booing by the attendants.

Jabbar Khan, a civil society activist, said that Maulana Azizs statement where he refused to condemn the Peshawar incident had hurt the emotions of thousands of countrymen. Why he is openly propagating his thoughts based on hate? He should be put behind bars by the authorities.
Naeem Mirza said Lal Masjid was openly supporting terrorists who carried out attack on school. He also demanded stern action against such elements freely rooming in the society.
The crowd then dispersed peacefully.
Later, there were reports that an FIR had been registered against four participants of the vigil.

[h=2]Protest outside Lal Mosque against Maulana Abdul Aziz[/h]Posted: December 18, 2014 - 230 PKT | Comment

ISLAMABAD: Protestors gathered outside the Lal Masjid on Thursday evening to protest against Maulana Abdul Aziz for his unwillingness to condemn the brutal attack on Army Public School in Peshawar, which left 148 people, mostly students, dead besides scores others injured.
In a statement given to a TV channel, Mualana Abdul Aziz said he would not condemn a single incident. It is inappropriate to condemn one incident and remain silent on the other, he said.
The people from different walks of life including representatives of civil society took strong exception to the above statement of Maulan Abdul Aziz and staged a protest demonstration outside the Lal Masjid.
The demonstrators lit candles and chanted slogans against the administrators of Lal Masjid.
The situation turned tense when the Lal Masjid administration asked the police to stop the sloganeering and make the crowd leave from outside the mosque. However, the protesters continued to raise slogans.
Later, additional contingents of police were called in.

The demonstrators finally dispersed as a result of their negotiations with the district administration.

Lal Masjid Islamabad is 21st Century Masjid e Zarrar. Governmnet must demolish it as per teachings of Holy Prophet PBUH and arrest its cheerleader Abdul Aziz (belong to client of Muslima Kazab).

All Muslims irrespective of sect or creed including Mufti e Azam of Saudi Arabia termed it brutality of Khawarjee Taliban, but this joker is creating dissensions in Islam. Media must not give him time besides Hamid Gul type characters just for creation of hot discussion.

Few evidences of Khawarjee Taliban extracted from social media are: -

ISLAMABAD: Maulana Abdul Aziz, the chief cleric of Lal Masjid, made it clear on Sunday that he respects the Islamic State (IS) because of similarity in mission and has no reservations in declaring that he holds the organisation in high regard.
He said that the students of Jamia Hafsa had prepared the Arabic video extolling the IS with his consent and the girls did not commit a crime by doing so.
Talking to The Express Tribune, Aziz said that he is not in favour of approaching the court to clarify that “we are not affiliated with IS.”
He said that there was no shame in declaring support for Daesh which, according to him, was out to enforce the “Islamic system.” The IS, nevertheless, has earned indignation from none other than the top clerics of the Kaaba and the rest of the mainstream Muslim religious scholars.
He said that he disowns the petition filed by Shohada Foundation, an NGO affiliated with the mosque and girls’ seminary, Jamia Hafsa, in the Islamabad High Court. “I don’t know why these boys (Shohada Foundation) are reluctant to tell that we support the organisation (Daesh) which wants to implement Islamic system,” Aziz said.
The Shohada Foundation has no affiliation with Lal Mosque and Jamia Hafsa, Aziz said, disowning the body which is pursuing cases related to the 2007 military operation.
Knowing full well the violent and brutal tactics of the IS, Aziz said Lal Masjid will promote its message. “Though we have no direct link with the leadership of the IS, we have deliberated at this issue and decided to promote the mission and message of Daesh,” he said.
Maulana also revealed that the girls of his seminary wanted to take out a rally in support of the IS carrying banners and placards, but he stopped them from doing so. The girl students did so after losing hope in the country’s political elite which remained silent when they had to suffer in the wake of the military operation against Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa, he justified the move.
A video in Arabic was released on November 26, by the Jamia Hafsa students declaring their support for the Islamic State and Baghdadi besides asking the Pakistani militants to join hands with IS fighters. A press statement issued by the Shohada Foundation clarified that “since the courts had failed to impart justice, the students of Jamia Hafsa and Lal Masjid in desperation issued the video addressing Daesh to help them get justice.”
Maulana Aziz said that he has already warned relevant authorities who are contemplating to carry out a search operation to trace out the girls who had prepared the video in support of the Islamic State. “I am warning the authorities to desist from committing another misadventure under the garb of the video which is harmless and only expresses support for Abu Bakar Al Baghdadi and his Islamic State. Authorities will have to face the consequences if an operation is carried out against the students of the Jamia Hafsa”.

As Britains Pakistani community mourns the massacre of 132 children in Tuesdays school siege, a British doctor with links to the Taliban is being investigated by Pakistans intelligence service, suspected of involvement in the attack.
Former NHS surgeon Mirza Tariq Ali fled the UK last year. He is reported to have become a senior Pakistani Taliban commander after his attempts to join Islamic State in Syria were hindered.
Pakistani authorities are currently investigating whether Ali could have been the commander of the six gunmen who opened fire on the school in Pakistan, leaving a total of 141 dead and a further 125 injured.
The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack. Pakistani officials believe that several factions of the local Pakistani Taliban orchestrated the siege from the border of neighboring Afghanistan.
Ali is reported to have had links with radical UK cleric Anjem Choudary while he was practicing medicine in the UK.

The doctor, who now operates under the moniker Dr Abu Obaidah Al-Islamabadi, has been described as someone of interestto the inquiry into the mass shooting. He is known to have appeared in a recruitment video for the Taliban in November, where he urged Pakistanis to stop resisting sharia law.
Ali was arrested by UK police in 2013 and charged with violent disorder after attending a demonstration in central London, organized by Choudary, where he advocated jihad in Syria. He was due to stand trial in May, but fled the country.
He was arrested in Croatia and deported to Pakistan, where he is reported to have risen quickly through Taliban ranks.

Ali was, however, prosecuted in his absence, and has been sentenced to 15 months in jail for Islamic sectarian violence; the first ever successful conviction of its type in the UK.
The investigation into Ali comes as Glasgow authorities offered their condolences to siege victims by flying the Pakistan flag at half-mast from the City Chambers on Friday.
Two grand-nephews of Glasgow Southside Central SNP councilor Jahangir Hanif were killed in the massacre.
The events in Peshawar on Tuesday were truly shocking, said councilor Sadie Docherty, Glasgows Lord Provost. The number of children involved in the shooting is particularly distressing.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragedy, particularly Glasgow's Pakistani community who make such a significant contribution to our city, she said.
