The Cellular Jail, also known as K?l? P?ani (Black Water), was a colonial ... the overseas journey (Kala Pani) to the islands also threatened them with loss of ...
History: Although the prison complex itself was constructed between 1896 and 1906, the British had been using the Andaman islands as a prison since the days in the immediate aftermath of the 1857 War of Independence.

Shortly after the rebellion was suppressed, the British executed many rebels. Those who survived were exiled for life to the Andamans to prevent them re-offending. 200 rebels were transported to the islands under the custody of the jailer David Barry and Major James Pattison Walker , a military doctor who had been warden of the prison at Agra. Another 733 from Karachi arrived in April, 1868.[SUP][3][/SUP][SUP][4][/SUP] More prisoners arrived from India and Burma as the settlement grew.[SUP][5][/SUP] Anyone who belonged to the Mughal royal family, or who had sent a petition to Bahadur Shah Zafar during the Rebellion was liable to be deported to the islands.

????? ??????? ??? ???????? ?? ????? ??????? ??

As far as the beauty of Island and buildings are concered, you are right but for which purpose
this imprisonment was used is our main topic ? It has been mostly told, who so ever went there
came never back at home. A very dark, frightening chapter of history. People of Indo-Pak
bestowed their lves for independence from English Raj.

there are thousands of punjabi, patan, sindhi and majority baloch people still living there in the worst condition. but neither india nor pakistan had taken a single step since independence to bring these real freedom fighters back to their homelands.......and they were never allowed to......

Hello everyone...

Hit across this page while I was trying to do some internet searching about my family history.
Well, I am from Port Blair, Andaman Islands. My great grandfather's father was given kaalapani ki sazaa and sent to the Cellular Jail by the British Raj. We've heard that he was from Peshawar but I feel that he could be from anywhere in the Frontier Province state. I was trying to look for any sources where a record of people who were sent to Kalapani has been maintained. Of course I didn't find any.. but if you guys know of anything or any old family in/ around Peshawar who could know of people given Kalapani ki sazaa, it will be of great help.

BTW, Sohailkhan007's comment above about thousands of punjabis, pathans still living there in the worst condition is totally false. I am myself a descendant of one of those prisoners, we are called "Old Inhabitants" or "Pre-42s" and we are a group comprising not only of Pathans, Punjabis, but also Biharis, Malayalis, Tamilians and Burmese. Many have returned to their original states but most Pathans, Punjabis and families like ours have not returned since our original states are no longer in India.

Much thanks
Almas
