It is normal for extreme athletes to have resting heart rates as low as 44 beats per minute (bpm) or even lower. Athletes often have highly efficient cardiovascular systems, meaning their hearts pump more blood with each beat, so their hearts don’t need to beat as frequently when at rest. A resting heart rate in the low 40s is not uncommon for endurance athletes like marathon runners, cyclists, or swimmers.
This condition, known as “athlete’s heart,” is generally a sign of good cardiovascular fitness.
