Hasnat Ahmad Khan, PhD, FRCS, (born 1 April 1959) is a British Pakistani heart and lung surgeon. He has previously worked at various hospitals in Sydney and London. In 2007, he was reported to be planning to return to Pakistan to accept a post at a hospital in Lahore.[SUP][1][/SUP][SUP][2][/SUP] Khan is known to have been doing a lot of charity work in Africa and Asia, and it is reported that all of his recent surgeries have been for charity.

[h=2]Early life and education[edit][/h]Khan was born on 1 April 1959.[SUP][3][/SUP] He belongs to an affluent Pashtun family from Jhelum, north of Lahore.[SUP][4][/SUP][SUP][5][/SUP][SUP][6][/SUP] Khan is the eldest of four children.[SUP][6][/SUP] His father is a graduate of the London School of Economics.[SUP][7][/SUP] He is a distant cousin of Imran Khan.[SUP][8][/SUP]
He holds bachelor degrees in medicine and in surgery.[SUP][9][/SUP] He specialised in heart and lung surgery.[SUP][9][/SUP] He also holds a PhD, fromImperial College.[SUP][9][/SUP]
[h=2]Career[edit][/h]Khan worked at different hospitals. Until 1991 he worked in Sydney, Australia and then began to work in London.[SUP][10][/SUP][SUP][11][/SUP] He served at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London from 1995 to 1996. Then he began to work at the London Chest Hospital.[SUP][9][/SUP] In 2000, he worked at St Bart’s hospital.[SUP][9][/SUP] Then he served at Harefield Hospital.[SUP][9][/SUP] In November 2007, he resigned from the post and began to head a cardiac hospital in Malasia.[SUP][12][/SUP]
[h=2]Relationship with Diana, Princess of Wales[edit][/h]Khan has been widely identified as an "ex-lover"[SUP][13][/SUP] and "boyfriend" of Diana, Princess of Wales. Their relationship began in 1995 after they met at the Royal Brompton Hospital where she was visiting a friend recovering from heart surgery.[SUP][14][/SUP] In May 1996, Princess Diana visited Khan family in Lahore.[SUP][15][/SUP] It was ended by Princess Diana in June 1997, according to Paul Burrell, Diana's butler.[SUP][15][/SUP][SUP][16][/SUP]
The heart surgeon told the police in 2004 that he doubted she had been pregnant when she died because she always took hercontraceptive pills.[SUP][17][/SUP] In March 2008, Khan said in a written statement to Lord Justice Scott Baker's inquest into Diana's death that their relationship had begun in the late summer of 1995, and that although they had talked about getting married, he believed that he would find the inevitable media attention "hell". He also said that he believed that the car crash which caused Diana's death was a "tragic accident".[SUP][18][/SUP] In 2008, Khan also replied to the claim that Diana had been mentally unstable: “There is no way at all that Diana was mentally unstable... There is nothing wrong with expecting your husband to be faithful, and being angry when he isn’t.”[SUP][19][/SUP][SUP][20][/SUP]
Diana's friends are reported to have described Khan as the 'love of her life' and to have spoken of her distress when he ended their relationship.[SUP][7][/SUP] He, however, is said to be reticent about speaking of how much he may have meant to her or even how much she meant to him. Many of Diana's friends believe she was using Dodi Fayed in order to make Hasnat jealous and win him back.[SUP][21][/SUP] Khan attendedthe funeral ceremony of Princess Diana at Westminister Abbey in September 1997.[SUP][12][/SUP][SUP][22][/SUP]
