Any information you may want to know about Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s elementary and secondary schools is now all online. The education department has made available all of its statistics and maps, even for schools with missing facilities, at www.kpese.gov.pk.
The data on the website includes comprehensive details on all 28,280 government schools in the province. Information from each school on enrolled students, employed teachers, parent-teacher councils as well as both available and missing facilities are cleanly and neatly categorised. You can even download KML formats of the 25 maps to see them in Google Earth. This information is part of the department’s EMIS which stands for “Education Management Information System”. It helps the department collect data, store it, integrate it, analyse and finally disseminate it. This collection of information makes it possible for planners and administrators to assess the system and its workings more effectively.
A non-profit that focuses on education has hailed the department for making this move. According to a press statement from the Centre for Governance and Public Accountability, issued on Tuesday, the centre’s executive director, Muhammad Anwar, said that the information available on the department’s website is crucial to getting citizens involved in the planning and management of public service delivery.
The Elementary and Secondary education department website has detailed district-wise maps of all government schools in K-P. PHOTO COURTESY: WWW.KPESE.GOV.PK. Anwar said openness and transparency were a basic prerequisite for good governance. “The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Elementary and Secondary Education department has taken a very positive step by making data on all schools available online,” said Anwar. Now citizens can track available and missing facilities in these schools, and can participate in improving the service delivery of public education, he added. The department’s website also provides details on the budgets of these schools. This information can be helpful and people can demand their elected representatives make sure that missing facilities are addressed at their relevant schools, remarked Anwar. The centre’s official further said that proactive disclosure has become a legal obligation under the province’s Right to Information Act 2013. “Such disclosure will automatically reduce the number of information requests under the Right to Information Act as most of the data will be available online. This will help save time and resources of public information officers and government departments,” he added. Published in The Express Tribune, July 9[SUP]th[/SUP], 2014.
PESHAWAR: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Speaker Asad Qaiser has said he will stay in Bannu till Eidul Fitr to oversee relief work for North Waziristan’s displaced inhabitants.
Addressing a gathering at his residence on Tuesday, Qaiser said the provincial government will use all resources at hand to help the internally displaced persons. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan has directed both Chief Minister Pervez Khattak and Qaiser to physically monitor relief work in Bannu, said the speaker. Since Khattak has to deal with his duties as the chief executive of the province, Qaisar has been asked to ensure his presence in Bannu till the end of Ramazan, he added. “I will be in Bannu and will directly supervise all efforts myself,” said Qaiser. “The party chief has placed his trust in me and I will try to live up to his expectations.” Other senior government officials and representatives of all departments will also be in the district to ensure aid is distributed quickly and efficiently. According to Qaiser, “If the government has to allocate money from its own budget for relief efforts, it will do it without hesitation.” He said around 1.5 million people displaced from Bara and Tirah in Khyber Agency, Bajaur and Orakzai agencies were already living in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and about 700,000 more have joined them as a result of the North Waziristan offensive. The provincial government was not fully prepared to deal with the mass exodus of people but is nonetheless trying to make arrangements in an emergency and will not spare any effort to alleviate their miseries, stated the speaker. The province stands behind the Pakistan Army, added Qaiser. He asked philanthropists to come forward and help in “this hour of need”; the Federal government should also help the province deal with the situation. He said it would be appreciated if the places where displaced families were being lodged were exempted from electricity load-shedding. He suggested each family be provided Rs50,000. HARIPUR: The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa tourism department is eager to develop Khanpur Dam as a major tourist attraction, official sources told The Express Tribune on Tuesday.
Built in the early 1980s, the 42-kilometre-long Khanpur reservoir serves as the main source of municipal and irrigation water supply to its domestic and industrial beneficiaries in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Taxila and different parts of the province and Punjab. The rain-fed dam also attracts scores of tourists from the surrounding regions. They enjoy bathing, swimming, boating and strolling on the banks. Additionally, many foreign and local tourists also flock to Khanpur for the numerous Buddhist archaeological sites that surround the dam. Khanpur Dam is also home to the annual water sports regatta organised by the Tourism Corporation of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa each October. The three-day event offers all kinds of entertainment to the estimated 100,000 to 200,000 tourists it attracts. There has been a long-standing demand from these visitors that the authorities develop Khanpur Dam into a resort that offers quality facilities. According to official sources, the government has already started preparing a proposal. According to the plan, the tourism department has decided to use 600 acres of land surrounding the dam. The project is said to include boating facilities and high-standard hotels, while the dam will be linked to Islamabad via Makhnial Township, the village adjoining Haripur and Islamabad Capital Territory. A source in the tourism department, requesting anonymity, claimed the provincial government has already allocated funds for the construction of the road. The source added that the tourism adviser, Amjid Afridi, recently visited Khanpur Dam and approved the initial plans. Afridi has also asked officials to speed up work, so that approval for funds can be sought from the provincial cabinet. The adviser is also said to have directed the tourism department to prepare a feasibility plan to develop Bhutri and Kahal dams in Haripur. Since Khanpur Dam lies at a short drive from Islamabad and is a secure area with a lot of scenic beauty to offer, its development could hold major potential for the progress of tourism in the province and offer low-cost facilities to residents of the twin cities. Minister for Information Shah Farman is expected to be replaced with Minister for Higher Education Mushtaq Ghani in yet another shuffle under the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-led Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government.
According to an insider, Farman is being replaced after complaints were received about him being “incompeten[t] and failing to respond to media queries.”
However, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan’s office in charge Naeemul Haq denied these reports. According to Haq, Farman had asked the party chief to reassign him. “Shah Farman will continue as the chief spokesperson for the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa chief minister,” said Haq.
