DUBAI Municipality has turned down an offer from a rich businessman who came forward to buy the fish with holy markings for Dhs. 1 million.
The fish with Arabic words Allah perfectly formed on it was acquired by Dubai Municipality from Deira fish market after a Pakistani fisherman Rab Nawas, who had spotted it among fish stock, brought it to the market for selling. The fish known as Safi is commonly found in the Gulf waters and was caught by fisherman along the Oman coast in the first week of April.
Officials said that the fish with holy markings is a priceless collection of the municipality and cannot be sold to any individual person.
"We told the businessman that we cannot sell the fish. It's one of the valuable collection of municipality and will remain with it." said Mohammed Abdul Karim Julfar, Assistant Director General for Financial Affairs in whose office the fish is kept at the moment.
The businessman, whose name was not disclosed, was so desperate to buy the fish that he offered to pay the entire ammount on the next day itself after acquiring the fish.
The incident which happened in the first week of April generated a lot of curiousity among people with thousands thronging the Deira fish market to have a glimpse of the fish. People jostled to take the picture of the fish, which many call it a "divine fish" as the words Allah were perfectly formed on it.
"God has created the whole universe. It's not the big thing for Him to create a small fish with His name on it," said Mohammed Raof after seeing the fish in the market.
"The fish with words Allah reinstates the fact that the entire universe is created by God. Everything belongs to Him including human and animal forms" said Mohammed javed, a vendor.
On the other hand, Dubai Municipality is planning to display the fish at the main enterance of the Municipality building in Deira from next week.
"The fish will be put on display in the DM building for couple of weeks before it is shifted to Deira fish market for permanent display. People can come to the municipality to catch a glimpse of the miracle fish, added Julfar.
The fish was sent to a special department in Ruler's Court in Abu Dhabi, which is involved in the preservation of endangered species.
"The fish is in perfect condition and will be intact for a long time to come" said Julfar who himself became emotional after seeing the words on the fish.
"It's difficult to tell what I felt after seeing the fish. Allah is perfectly formed on the fish and one has to see it to believe it," added Jufar.
The fish is also known as rabbit fish and its scientific name is Siganus Canaliculatus.
