The below is a letter to the editor by a reader....but it fits Pakistan to the tee.

Israel’s judiciary is its only check on power

San Francisco: It is rather incredible that a law that would override decisions by the Israeli Supreme Court based on a majority vote by the ruling coalition could be so close to passing.

Israeli military reservists are threatening not to serve if there is no objective standard of right and wrong. Hundreds of thousands are protesting, led by the major trade unions, and there is speculation that even the highest level of Israeli security, the Mossad, is involved in supporting these protests. Let it suffice to say that this move by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to usurp the power and independence of the judiciary is highly troublesome to Israelis concerned for their democracy.
Let’s just call this the “Netanyahu Stay Out of Jail, Make Your Own Rules, Pro Corruption Act.” Under the guise of the Supreme Court not representing “the will of the people,” he has pulled an authoritarian, despotic fast one: melding together a coalition of hard-right, religious-right, authoritarian politicians to define “the will of the people.” This is as transparent as it gets: an authoritarian seizing power (again) and undermining justice to save himself from corruption charges and potential conviction. The new law would allow the majority in power to terminate these charges.

In a very rare example of a U.S. president getting involved in the domestic affairs of Israel, President Biden has decried this potential law. It is debatable whether a U.S. president should be involved in such a way, but I sympathize with his concerns for the democracy of Israel. Thousands upon thousands of Israelis see through this threat to their democracy. Bruce Farrell Rosen
