Only seven Pakistani universities have been included in the best 1000 universities in the world, with the same seven universities retaining their spots yet again, in the prestigious Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2020.

The annual QS rankings are among the few international rankings that are looked up by students, education experts, academicians and industry as a reliable source, internationally. This year’s ranking was dominated by Universities in the US and UK, who together grabbed nine of the top ten positions for the year 2020. The top spot went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology for a record eight-year, making it the longest reign of a higher education institute in the QS rankings’ history.

Seven Pakistani Universities

Seven Pakistani universities retained their spots yet again, making their names in the list of the top 1000 universities of the world. The list includes PIEAS, NUST, Quaid-e-Azam University, COMSATS, LUMS, UET and Punjab University, with PIEAS securing the highest 375th spot in the world. However, the number still falls short of 23, which is the number of Indian universities included in the World University Rankings 2020; one less from last year’s ranking. India’s best ranking was secured by Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) which jumped 10 spots, securing 152nd spot QS rankings 2020.

PIEAS rose straight to the top to become the highest ranked Pakistani university in the QS 2020, jumping from 397th in 2019 to 375th spot this year, securing an overall score of 29.2, with individual scores of 96.4 in faculty-student, 5.4 in academic reputation, 4.6 in employer reputation and 36.2 in citations per faculty. It was followed by NUST that took the 400th position, with a slight improvement from its 2019 placement of 417th attaining an overall score of 28.2, with 76.6 in faculty-student, 39.4 in employer reputation, 16.4 in academic reputation, and 9.2 in citations per faculty.

Next in the ranking was Quaid-e-Azam University that jumped from 551-560 band in 2019 to 511-520 band in this year’s ranking, attaining 77.4 in citations per faculty category. LUMS retained 701-750 band in this year’s ranking getting 36.3 in employer reputation, while COMSATS fell down from 751-800 to 801-1000th spot this year. UET and Punjab universities also retained their last year’s positions securing a place in 801-100 and 800-801 bands respectively, both securing 26 and 20.2 in employer reputation category

China topped the Asia region with 42 higher education institutes making a mark in the top 1000 for the year 2020, followed by Japan (41), South Korea (30), Malaysia (20), Taiwan (16), and Iran (6). To view the full list of rankings, click here.

So we have 2 in the top 500.

Pakistan is 6% of world population, we should have at-least 60 in the top 1000.

South Korea is only 0.6% of world population and they have 30 universities in top 1000. If South Korea had population of Pakistan they would have over 200 universities in top 1000.

Its sad that we have to routinely compare ourselves to India in every aspect, to either justify a failure, or to display a failure. In either scenario, its absurd.

Pakistan needs to set its own standards. We have a long way to go in education. More important for Pakistan is to simply have more universities, period. Forget about having more universities in the top 1000 list.

This is a fake ranking system- Tell us what is their position in THE ranking system.

This is a fake ranking system- Tell us what is their position in THE ranking system.

They all have their flaws, and you should be careful to drill down into the detail rather than looking just at the number.

Having said that, the ”big three” are Shanghai, Times Higher Education (THE) and QS. The Shanghai ranking was the first, but is pretty much a nonsense in actuality. Two major flaws are the number of Nobel prizes won by alumni as a proxy for education – all this tells you is that the university could attract good undergraduates c. 50 years ago – and failing to correct for size, so merging two mediocre universities universities would, without any change in quality, give a university that was twice as good, which is clearly nonsense.

So that leaves QS and THE as the two well-known and relatively reliable world rankings. They're not perfect (the idea that faculty to student ratio has anything to do with teaching quality is a fantasy – it might mean that faculty have more research time, but that's it) and both rely heavily on academic reputation surveys that measure prestige within academia (i.e. research) rather than teaching quality.

Something to be aware of is that virtually all of the indicators used by all of the global rankings measure research performance rather than undergraduate teaching, which is what is often is actually of interest but for which global metrics are not available. The QS employer reputation survey is possibly more useful than the main table in assessing real-world (rather than academic) prestige based on undergraduate quality rather than research.

If South Korea would have the population size of Pakistan, I doubt that South Korea could produce these quality universities, as size of population is also a problem.

Yes..that goes without saying. My point was, that if we build 1000 top class universities, all of which are in the top 1000 ranking, would that mean that South Korean universities are now useless?
Just because a school is not in the list doesnt mean its not good enough. In our case, we simply dont even have enough schools to begin with.

Not that it will make much difference to the argument you are making because you will still stand corrected in your argument but Pakistan's population is 2.8% of world's population not 6%.

It doesn't matter if you have 200 or 2000 Universities, it will take at least three generations to eliminate the village mindset. The whole society is immature.
