LETS TRY TO ANALYSE THIS PROJECT, AS A PROJECT TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS OF TRANSPORTATION IN LAHORE AND ITS POLITICAL IMPORTANCE.[/h][h=2]
LAHORE IS ONE OF PAKISTANS MOST ACCESSIBLE CITIES WHERE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE TRANSPORTATION IS AVAILABLE 24 HOURS A DAY AND 7 DAYS A WEEK. ACCORDING TO AN ESTIMATE ABOUT 75% OF PEOPLE RESIDENTS IN LAHORE HAVE THEIR OWN TRANSPORTATION. DUE TO THESE REASONS, THE TRAFFIC JAM IS A BIG PROBLEM FOR LAHORE AND USE OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT IS BEING ENCOURAGED FROM LONG TIME. BUS SYSTEM IS ONE OF THE VERY AVAILABLE AND CHEAP PUBLIC TRANSPORT MEDIUM FOR LAHORE RESIDENTS. THERE ARE MANY BIG BUS SERVICES, INCLUDING PREMIER BUS SERVICE OWNED BY BEACONHOUSE GROUP AND SAMMI DAEWOO BUS GROUP, PROVIDING PUBLIC TRANSPORT SERVICE FOR LAHORE RESIDENTS. THEY HAVE REASONABLE PRICES FOR DIFFERENT ROUTES WITHIN LAHORE CITY AND ARE PERFORMING WELL. HOWEVER, THERE ARE MANY TRAFFIC ISSUES SPECIALLY TRAFFIC JAM AND ON A PARTICULAR TRACK BETWEEN GAJUMATA AND SHADRAH (27 KM TRACK) WHICH LINKS DIFFERENT PARTS OF LAHORE.[/h][h=2]
THE ROUTE BETWEEN GAJUMATA AND SHADRAH HAS ALREADY LOT OF BUSES BEING RUN ON THIS ROUTE AND USUALLY TAKE 2 HOURS TO REACH FROM ONE END TO SECOND END AS QUOTED BY PUNJAB GOVT AS WELL. DIFFERENT SOLUTIONS TO SOLVE THE TRANSPORTATION PROBLEM FOR THIS TRACK HAVE BEEN PROPOSED IN THE PAST, LAHORE RAPID MASS TRANSIT SYSTEM (LRMTS), A RAIL TRANSIT SYSTEM PROPOSED IN 1991 BY LAHORE TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORT STUDIES FUNDED BY WORLD BANK, A PROPOSAL FUNDED BY ASIAN DEVELOPMENT BANK FOR RAIL SYSTEM FOR 82 KM WITH 60 STATIONS ON THIS ROUTE FOR THE PRICE OF PKR 1 BILLION.[/h][h=2]
THE CURRENT GOVERNMENT HAS COMPLETED A PROJECT CALLED METRO BUS SYSTEM AS A SOLUTION TO SOLVE THE ABOVE TRANSPORTATION PROBLEMS. THE SCOPE OF THIS PROJECT IS 27 KM LONG ROAD TO PROVIDE SERVICES TO PEOPLE TRAVELLING FROM GAJUMATA AND SHADRAH AND WILL REDUCE THE TRAVEL TIME TO 1 HOUR AS COMPARED TO 2 HOURS TRAVEL TIME SERVICE PROVIDED BY OTHER BUS SERVICES AS DESCRIBED ABOVE. THE ELECTRONIC, INTELLIGENT TICKETING SYSTEM IS ALSO BEING INTRODUCED ALONG WITH THIS SERVICE WHICH IS A METHOD BEING USED IN DEVELOPED COUNTRIES. THIS TICKETING SYSTEM WILL BE VERY USEFUL AND CAN BE DEPLOYED IN MANY DIFFERENT PLACES AS WELL IN FUTURE. THERE WILL BE 100 BUSES RUNNING ON TWO LINES CALLED FEROZEPUR ROAD LINE EXTENDING 28 KM AND MULTAN ROAD LINE EXTENDING 12 KM. THE APPROXIMATE COST OF THIS PROJECT IS PKR 25 BILLION WHEN BUS SERVICE WILL BE IN FULL SWING.[/h][h=2]

AS WE HAVE SEEN ABOVE THAT PUNJAB GOVERNMENT HAS ALREADY SPENT PKR 24 BILLIONS MORE AS COMPARED TO THE PROJECT PROPOSAL FUNDED BY ASIAN DEVELOPMENT BANK OF PKR 1 BILLION TO PROVIDE BUS SERVICE OF 27 KM INSTEAD OF RAIL SERVICE OF 82 KM WITH 60 STATIONS.
