PTI, JUI-S mull electoral alliance for 2018 polls

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Sami (JUI-S) on Sunday agreed on working out modalities for forming a possible political alliance before the upcoming general elections.

This was decided on Sunday in a meeting held between PTI Chairman Imran Khan and JUI-S chief Maulana Samiul Haq at K-P House in the federal capital. Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak, K-P government spokesperson Shah Farman, and JUI-S leaders including Maulana Hamidul Haq and Maulana Yousaf Shah – were also present during the meeting.

The leaders of the two parties discussed political developments in the country and agreed on developing a strategy for a possible political alliance for the coming general elections.

“The meeting went well. Both parties are very close to each other. Our leader (Samiul Haq) appreciated the PTI-led K-P government’s efforts to bring reforms in the education system as per the injunctions of the holy Quran and Shariah in the meeting,” JUI-S senior vice-chief Maulana Hamidul Haq told The Express Tribune.

He added that the possibility of forming a political alliance was also discussed in the meeting and both parties agreed that they would develop a joint strategy for the elections.“[Imran] Khan wants Maulana saab (Maulana Samiul Haq) to guide them in the coming elections,” he said, adding, “We would look for seat-to-seat adjustments at party level with [PTI]. A final decision regarding a political alliance would be taken later.”

Khan said, “The country can’t make development when there are corrupt elements present in the country,” adding, “Likeminded politicians should make joint struggle to bring Pakistan out from the political and social crises.”A statement issued by the K-P CM House quoted Khan as saying, “We are thankful to Maulana Samiul Haq and his party for supporting and assisting our party in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa for the implementation and publication of Islam.”

“The JUI-S and our party have ideological similarities on different national issues,” the PTI chief was quoted as saying in the statement.He added that they wanted to support religious seminaries to make them self-sustainable and give a dignified position to religious scholars in the province.

The K-P government previously gave a grant of Rs300 million for the construction and rehabilitation of Darul Uloom Haqqania in Akora, Khattak. The seminary in Nowshera district is run by Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Sami chief Maulana Samiul Haq.

Nowshera: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak calls on Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam’s Maulana Samiul Haq on Monday.

PESHAWAR: Darul Uloom Haqqania in Nowshera has become a hub of political activities with the expected revival of Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, as political figures, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak, went there to meet chief of his own faction of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Maulana Samiul Haq.
According to an official statement issued here on Monday, CM Khattak visited the seminary at Akora Khattak and held a one-on-one meeting with Maulana Sami. It said the chief minister thanked the JUI-S chief for supporting the Pakistan Tehreek Insaf candidate in the NA-4 (Peshawar) by-election and his contribution towards removal of mistakes from textbooks.
Earlier, former officer of the Inter-Services Intelligence retired Major Mohammad Aamir called on Maulana Sami and held discussion on various issues, including electoral alliance among religious parties ahead of the next general election.
“During all these meetings and discussions we reviewed the current political situation, including restoration of the MMA,” Maulana Sami told Dawn by phone from Akora Khattak.

“My party wants a broader alliance of all religious parties and groups and that they contest the next elections from a joint platform,” he said, adding that the MMA should not be confined only to six parties.

He was of the opinion that other religious groups and alliances, including Difa-i-Pakistan Council and Milli Yakjehti Council, should also be included in the MMA — a defunct six-party religio-political alliance that is likely to be formally restored next month.
The alliance’s leaders, including Mau*lana Fazlur Rehman of the JUI-F and Sirajul Haq of the Jamaat-i-Islami, have agreed in principle to restore the MMA and a formal announcement in this regard would be made in December. The alliance, which was formed in 2002, fell apart in 2007.
Maulana Sami said the executive council of JUI-S met at Akora Khattak on Monday and deliberated on joining of the six-party alliance, adding that a meeting of the party’s general council would be held in Lahore on Nov 28 to decide whether or not to join the MMA.
“We believe that the JUI-F and Jamaat-i-Islami should quit coalition governments at the Centre and in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, respectively, otherwise revival of the MMA would be useless,” he said, adding: “Political parties always form alliances against sitting governments. It looks strange that on the one hand they (JUI-F and JI) are in the federal and provincial governments and, on the other, they are cobbling an alliance against the very parties with which they are sharing the governments.”
Responding to a question, Maulana Sami said he and the KP chief minister also discussed cooperation between the PTI and JUI-S in the next elections.
He said Major Aamir was also in favour of a broader alliance of religious parties.
Pervez Khattak also belongs to Nowshera and his government had allocated Rs300 million in the 2016-17 budget for the construction of new buildings and upgrade of Darul Uloom Haqqania.
Our Correspondent in Swabi adds: Maj Aamir told the media that he would meet Senator Sirajul Haq soon to pave the way for restoration of the MMA and contesting the next elections from a joint platform.
He said three religious leaders — Maulana Sami, Sirajul Haq and Maulana Tayyab — would play greater role in the present situation. “This is the time to put our heads together and work collectively for the rights of Muslims and against those who want to harm this pious religion,” he added.

Okay make a correction here. I was talking about TTP who killed children in Army public school. And they were asking them to recite Kalima before killing them. That is the version of Islam that Molana saab and his madrassa is and was promoting. If you want to deny that you will be a lier to the core Sir.
Molana saab has not done any crime but he is the soft face of that visiousness.

پی ٹی آئ اگر یہ سمجھتی ہے کہ وہ کے پی میں اس بار کلین سویپ کرنے کی پوزیشن میں ہے تو وہ تنکوں کا سہارا کیوں ڈھونڈ رہی ہے؟ کیا پی ٹی آئ کو کےپی میں اپنی کارکردگی کے حوالے سے کسی قسم کا خوف ہے؟

It is true that PTI is in a strong position, and most likely, wont need alliances for the next election. But it is important to keep a working relationship with JUI-S in order to avoid alienating them and making sure that our next generation of madrassa students has access to wordly knowledge as well, apart from religious education. We are talking about reforming an entire generation...and use of force is never the answer. America the mighty has been trying that strategy in Afghanistan for 16 years, and has failed. They did it in Iraq and failed.
