Senior Pakistani Officer Honored with Thesis Award

MONTEREY, Calif. - Pakistani air force Air Commodore Shahid Latif Bajwa will graduate with outstanding thesis honors during the Naval Postgraduate Schools upcoming Summer Graduation Ceremony, an honor bestowed upon less than 10 percent of the schools graduates and the first of its kind to a senior Pakistani officer.

Id like to acknowledge the immense contribution made by my thesis adviser, Dr. Carolyn Halladay. I hold her in the highest esteem, as a scholar and as a human being, said Bajwa.

As a general officer in the Pakistani Air Force, Bajwa offers a unique perspective on U.S. foreign policy in South Asia. Prior to attending NPS, Bajwa spent three years teaching at Pakistans National Defense University, and credits his NPS experience with opening his eyes to different viewpoints.

I received a different perspective [at NPS] I have learned here that if you say something that is logical and makes sense, then it doesnt matter who you are or where you are from, people will listen and respect what you have to say, said Bajwa. I benefited from the faculty, comprised of accomplished scholars who have published in their respective fields and from fellow students that are coming from the field in Afghanistan [And] they too benefit from the Pakistani perspective.

Congratulations!!

Bajwa's thesis recommends greater involvement of USAID-funded projects, in particular vaccination and DNA sampling, "Free" Media development, civil society and NGO capacity-building, women emancipation, rural support programmes for Balochistan and FATA, and job creation for minorities, as well as foreign "study" trips and trainings for politicians, civil-military bureaucracy and superior judiciary, Nishan-e-Imtiaz awards to all trainers and security contractors working in Pakistan, and future joint operations of civil+military drones in Pakistan.

Vive la libert!

He did not share the out outline his thesis.............It will be so interesting to find a new dimension of PAK-US cooperation? Which I would say a new trick to prolong PAK ARMY hanging around and protecting US interests in and around.

Very true!

btw, the award is for producing an "excellent" thesis (as desired): "U.S. Security Cooperation with India and Pakistan: A Comparative Study" - Thesis Advisor: Carolyn Halladay, JD

Excerpts released so far…. Bajwa, Pakistan's purportedly globalization expert, offers recommendations and a road ahead... "broad-based, long-term relations" ... "The United States should [also] invest more ...
USAID and its positive projection in the Pakistani media is a step in the right direction, but it needs further expansion" (i.e. ... a recipe for perpetual slavery)

The whole exercise of a Pakistan future commander writing a thesis on this topic in NPS appears to be most effective method of indoctrination and brainwashing. The subject 'owns' the ideas and concepts and had the power and will to implement his 'owned' knowledge and beliefs.
This is a sceptics view, maybe his work us actually scholarly, sincere and original and his intellect exceeds others.

my friend, yes, you/we can wish that his work would be genuinely "scholarly" -- but the world knows that military academies are not the places to produce scholarly works and I wouldn't live on assumptions, cynicism or day dreaming.

My observations are analytical based on what he has said in his interview so far and on the fact that his advisor was also not a Pakistan specialist but rather a historian of central Europe turned lawyer.

This 1-star general is so overwhelmed by his foreign tour that he also said in the same interview:
"When I go back to Pakistan and become a senior commander or a staff officer, the knowledge that I gained here will be very useful ... I will be able to share a different perspective ..... What I have learned here will be put to good use for the benefit of ... valued ally, the United States."
