South Koreas Constitutional Court on Friday ruled unanimously to remove President Park Geun-hye from office, the capstone of a sweeping corruption scandal that has consumed South Korea for months.

The Constitutional Court on March 1, 2017, rules to uphold the parliamentary impeachment of President Park Geun-hye, acting Chief Justice Lee Jung-mi said in a nationally televised ruling on the countrys second presidential impeachment trial. Her violations of the countrys Constitution and law were grave enough to warrant her permanent ouster, according to the top court.

With the decision, which is final and unchallengeable under Korean law, Park has become the nations first successfully impeached president.

The nation now must hold a presidential election within 60 days, making it likely to fall on May 9.

A daughter of former President Park Chung-hee and the nations first female president, Park has been embroiled in a scandal involving her longtime friend Choi Soon-sil since late last year.

The parliament voted to impeach her on Dec. 9, following weeks of massive street rallies calling for her resignation amid a burgeoning scandal involving her and Choi.

A total of 13 charges were leveled against Park. The key charges included that she let her friend Choi, who holds no government post, meddle in state affairs and colluded with Choi to extort donations from local firms for two entities under Chois control in exchange for policy favors.

The charges of corruption are meager compared to Pakistani rulers. But they have taken a bold step

South Korea: Constitutional court upholds President Park Geun-hye's impeachment

[PLAYWIRE=1002956]5362982[/PLAYWIRE]

South Korea's Constitutional Court has upheld a decision by the country's National Assembly to impeach President Park Geun-hye.

Park is the first South Korean president to be impeached. An election for her replacement must be held within 60 days.

The decision was announced by Justice Lee Jung-mi in a live, national broadcast.

Seoul, South Korea (CNN)South Korea's Constitutional Court has upheld a decision by the country's National Assembly to impeach President Park Geun-hye.

The decision was unanimous, with all eight judges on the court voting to remove Park, the country's first female president, from office.
Park is the first South Korean President to be impeached. An election for her replacement must be held within 60 days.
The decision was announced by Justice Lee Jung-mi in a live, national broadcast.
Police issued the "Gabho" emergency order in Seoul ahead of Friday's announcement, the highest level possible.
Officers are on standby for expected protests, with 270 units being mobilized -- about 21,000 in total.

The US, a key regional ally, responded to the decision by offering assurances that the two countries' relationship would continue uninterrupted.
"We will continue to work with Prime Minister Hwang for the remainder of his tenure as acting President, and we look forward to a productive relationship with whomever the people of South Korea elect to be their next president," acting State Department spokesman Mark Toner said.

‎"The United States continues to be a steadfast ally, friend, and partner to the ROK," he said, using an acronym for South Korea's official name, the Republic of Korea.
"The US-ROK alliance will continue to be a linchpin of regional stability and security, and we will continue to meet all our alliance commitments, especially with respect to defending against the threat from North Korea."

Political chaos

Park's problems began in October, when revelations emerged about the influence Park's confidante and adviser Choi Soon-sil had over the President.
The court upheld the impeachment, which was enacted by South Korean lawmakers in December, because she was judged to have abused her authority in helping Choi raise donations from companies.
Choi is currently on trial for abuse of power and fraud.

In December, lawmakers voted to impeach Park by a vote of 234 to 56, stripping away her executive powers. Since then she has remained in the presidential Blue House, but has remained largely out of public view.
Local media and opposition parties have accused Choi of abusing her relationship with the president to force companies to donate millions of dollars to foundations she runs. She denies all charges against her.

Her final weeks in office were marred by huge demonstrations as hundreds of thousands of South Koreans braved the brutally cold winter temperatures to take to the streets of Seoul and call for her ouster.
In a brief televised apology however, Park made it clear that she had no intentions of resigning. In December, the National Assembly voted 234 to 56 to impeach her.

Supporters of President Park Geun-hye of South Korea at a protest near the Constitutional Court on Friday, before the court issued a ruling to oust her. Her removal from the presidency capped months of turmoil.CreditKim Hong-Ji/ReutersSEOUL, South Korea A South Korean court removed the president on Friday, a first in the nations history, rattling the delicate balance of relationships across Asia at a particularly tense time.
Her removal capped months of turmoil, as hundreds of thousands of South Koreans took to the streets, week after week, to protest a sprawling corruption scandal that shook the top echelons of business and government.
Park Geun-hye, the nations first female president and the daughter of the Cold War military dictator Park Chung-hee, had been an icon of the conservative establishment that joined Washington in pressing for a hard line against North Koreas nuclear provocations.
Now, her downfall is expected to shift South Korean politics to the opposition, whose leaders want more engagement with North Korea and are wary of a major confrontation in the region. They say they will re-examine the countrys joint strategy on North Korea with the United States and defuse tensions with China, which has sounded alarms about the growing American military footprint in Asia.

Ms. Parks powers were suspended in December after a legislative impeachment vote, though she continued to live in the presidential Blue House, largely alone and hidden from public view, while awaiting the decision by the Constitutional Court. The house had been her childhood home: She first moved in at the age of 9 and left it nearly two decades later after her mother and father were assassinated in separate episodes.

Judges at the impeachment ruling at the Constitutional Court on Friday. The downfall of Ms. Park is expected to shift South Korean politics to leaders who want more engagement with the North.CreditYonhap, via European Pressphoto AgencyEight justices of the Constitutional Court unanimously decided to unseat Ms. Park for committing acts that violated the Constitution and laws throughout her time in office, Acting Chief Justice Lee Jung-mi said in a ruling that was nationally broadcast.
Ms. Parks acts betrayed the trust of the people and were of the kind that cannot be tolerated for the sake of protecting the Constitution, Justice Lee said.
As the verdict was announced, silence fell over thousands of Park supporters who rallied near the courthouse waving South Korean flags. Soon, they tried to march on the court and called for destroying it. When the police blocked them, some of the mostly elderly protesters attacked the officers with flagpoles, hurling water bottles and pieces of the sidewalk pavement. Two pro-Park demonstrators, ages 60 and 72, died during the unrest.
Ms. Park did not comment on the ruling, and remained in the presidential palace after her removal from power. But In Myung-jin, the leader of Ms. Parks conservative Liberty Korea Party, said he humbly respected the ruling.
With the immunity conferred by her office now gone, Ms. Park, 65, faces prosecutors seeking to charge her with bribery, extortion and abuse of power in connection with allegations of conspiring with a confidante, her childhood friend Choi Soon-sil, to collect tens of millions of dollars in bribes from companies like Samsung.
