Farrukh Khokhar, the son of Taji Khokhar, who escaped from police custody with the help of more than 25 armed men on December 2, surrendered to the city police officer (CPO) here on Wednesday after a long meeting with Haji Nawaz Khokhar, former deputy speaker of the National Assembly.
Police, however, registered a case against Taji Khokhar, his two sons Farrukh Khokhar and Umar Khokhar and armed men involved in the kidnapping of Farrukh Khokhar under the Anti-Terrorism Act and arrested thirteen gunmen among them.
Haji Nawaz Khokhar, former deputy speaker of the National Assembly, played a vital role in Khurram Khokhars surrender to police, sources in police said. Police made headway in the case after recovering a vehicle used in the kidnapping, police said.
CPO Akhtar Umar Hayat Lalika, when contacted by this scribe for his comments, termed it a remarkable breakthrough. He said that he was well aware of the movement and activities of Khurram Khokhar and the armed men involved in his kidnapping. He was encircled from every side and the circle around him was tightened with the passage of time and finally police got him, Lalika said. He said that police warned them through Khokhar family to surrender otherwise he would be dealt with an iron hand. He changed his locations several times but police kept an eye on him and followed him and finally Khurram Khokhar surrendered himself, Lalika said. We have accomplished the claim that Khurram Khokhar will be arrested within 48 hours, the CPO said.
More than 25 gunmen kidnapped Taji Khokhars younger son Farrukh Khokhar when police were shifting him back to the Adiala Jail along with Taji Khokhar, Umar Khokhar and three others in the Sabra Bibi killing case after their production in the court on Monday.
As the police convoy reached near Gulshanabad at Adiala Jail Road in the protection of about 18 policemen, including the Elite Force personnel, gun-totting gangsters in five or six double-cabin vehicles intercepted the convoy carrying Imtiaz alias Taji Khokhar, his two sons Farrukh Imtiaz Khokhar and Umar Khokhar and two other accused.
The interceptors held the armed cops at gunpoint and asked them to hand them over Farrukh Khokhar otherwise they would riddle everyone with bullets. The cops handed over Farrukh Khokhar to them after which they sped away from the scene without any resistance from the armed cops, said police, quoting eyewitnesses and police personnel guarding the accused.
Taji Khokhar, his son Umar Khokhar and two other accused were travelling in an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) while Farrukh Khokhar was travelling in a private double-cabin vehicle without any apparent reason, police sources said.
The gangsters, who were well-aware of the seating positions of the accused, pulled Farrukh Khokhar out of the vehicle and took him away with them. Police offered no resistance during the entire episode of kidnapping and didnt even move during shifting of Farrukh Khokhar to their vehicle nor did they try to chase the captors, sources said, quoting eyewitnesses.
Quoting the preliminary inquiry report, sources said that the SHO of the Airport Police Station ordered Farrukh Khokhars shifting to the jail in a private vehicle.
As many as six police officials, including SHO (Airport) Azher Shah and Sub-Inspector Akhtar, deployed on guard duty, have been arrested and an FIR has been lodged against them.
The departmental inquiry was initiated against the police officials under the supervision of SP CIA. The investigation team completed the preliminary investigation and submitted its report to the CPO with recommendations.
Haji Nawaz Khokhar, when contacted by this correspondent for his comments, said that it was his duty to resolve the issue and to play a positive role in this matter.

The Airport Police registered an FIR (No. 643) against nine assailants under Sections 302, 148, 149, 324 and 427 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) on the complaint of Mohammad Yaqoob, the husband of the deceased, against nine accused, included Taji Khokhar, Umar Khokhar, Farrukh Khokhar, Irfan alias Nikku, Anwar-ul-Haq, Ramzan alias Bana, Saghir, Hassan Shah and Javed.
