Purdah is not just for women alone. Men are also ordered to guard their gaze. If we adhere to the requirements set forth in our religion, there should be no problem for women to take part in any legitimate sport.

its her personal choice to wear scarf in competition..if there are no health and safety issues... she can wear what ever she wants to... islam shudnt be brought in here as her clothes are not in accordance with islam and wearing islamic clothes u cannot do weight lifting, running, high jumping etc..... it wil be surely health and safety issue as the clothing shudnt be tight revealing human body..... this goes for both men and women taking part in athletics.... cricket football etc are diffrent kid of sport...
